Show Equalized Taxes Is Aim of Association The July issue of thn Utah Taxpayer, Tax-payer, official organ of the Utah Taxpayers Association, will raise tin; question whether or not people on t!n public payroll should be subjected to the same economic laws respecting income as are the taxpayers who supply sup-ply the money. In this issue it states that citizens are divided into two classes the .sheltered and the exposed. ex-posed. The publication calls attention to the conditions f thn fanner whose tax bill constantly increases year after af-ter year while the prices of his commodities com-modities are lowered. While it demands, de-mands, 100 bushels of wheat this year to pay his tax debt this year when wheat is $1 per bushel, it will require 200 bushels of wheat to meet the same obligation next year when wheat is selling at 50 cents per bushel. And so thei question is raised whether or not public officials should remr.'n immune from the fluctuations of prices or whether they should be called upon to share the fortunes or j misfortunes of those who pay the tax burden. The publication contends that if this obviously unfair situation con- ' tinues it will lead to the complete ' confiscation of property. j Commendation is given to the school superintendents and school boards throughout the state in their recognition of the present financial distress and lowering the tax burdens almost invariabiby throughout the. j state, as a result of the co-operative j (Continued on last page) Equalized Taxes Is Aim of Association1 I i (Continued from page 1) -..c'.ion between the organized taxpay-j ing groups and the school people in1 ihe -10 districts of the state. The editorial of the issue raises the question whether taxpayers should; strike. The answer is in the negative; since the contention is put forth that! the time, to strike is while the bud-i gets are being- prepared and bond is-; sues proposed and higher levies ad-1 vocated, and that the only tax relief re-lief lies not in a taxpayers strike, but in-expenditure control. |
