Show THE FIGHT TO SAVE LIFE 1 he railroads of the country have been carrying on active campaigns against carelessness by pedestrians and automobiles in crossing railroad tracks. ' v A California law goes into effect August 31 requiring motor vehicles carrying passengers for hire, school busses or trucks cairy-i'ig cairy-i'ig explosives or inflamables to come to a full stop before crossing steam railroad or interurban or suburban electric railways. 1 he necessity for such a law in all states has been emphasized in Oregon where three different automobiles were driven on to the Southern Pacific Co.'s tracks in front of oncoming trains. The result re-sult has been two deaths and several injuries. In each instance the track was in clear view a mile or more in each direction. Not only should the California law be adopted in other states but it should be made more stringent and require that all automobiles, automo-biles, either commercial or private, must come to a stop before crossing railroad tracks. The California law provides a fine of $500 or imprisonment not exceeding six months, or both, fo rnon-compliance with the lav by commercial vehicles. A fine or suspension of driver's license cr both could be applied to priviate vehicles. |
