Show Carl Westlund Takes Own Life Following- several months of ill I health and ilosolalion, Carl K. Westlund, West-lund, a long resident of this valley, took his own life at this home late last Friday afternoon. 'Westlund went to the home of his wife, and in her presenee took a powder, which afterwards proved to be strychnine. He left the house and was headed for his cabin when he fell to the ground in awful agony. Passersby i noticed the man and help was immediately im-mediately summoned and when medical medi-cal aid arrived he was in the throes of death and life soon passed away. Ill health and domestic troubles are said to be the cause of the rush act. Carl Westlund was 70 years of age at the time of his death. lie was a native of Sweden and camq to America several years ago. lie has -resided in the Gunnison valley for a number of years and generally followed fol-lowed the vocation of a farmer. Late years, however, his health failed him and he lived a recluse in his cabin. He was a member of the L. D. S. church and he lived strictly to his belief. The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Nettie Peterson, and three sons, Wilford, Leonard and Alfred Westlund, all residents of Gunnison. A brother of Mr. Westlund West-lund also resides at Sandy. Funeral services were held at the home of the deceased last Sunday-afternoon Sunday-afternoon at 4 o'clock. Bishop E. L. Swalberg was . in charge and the principal speakers were A. E. Park, J Joseph A. Larson and C. E. Ferre. j Each of the speakers paid a high j tribute to the deceased. A quartet ' sang several selections and follow- j ing the ceremonies the remains were j taken to the city cemetery for final ! interment. The act of Mr. Westlund has cast a deep sorrow among the citizens of the city. Suicides here are a decided' rarety, the last one previous to the Westlund case being more than eight years ago. |
