Show Floods Wreck Diversion Dam A cloud burst in the hill west of Redmond last Tuesday morning wrought havoc for the Tiute Reservoir Reser-voir & Irrigation company and incidentally in-cidentally caused big losses to farmers farm-ers operating in that vicinity. Shortly Short-ly after 11 o'clock a bank of water estimated several feet high and covering cov-ering several hundred feet in widh swooped down and swept over the big canal that feeds the laterals for the farmers on the west bench along the line of the canal. Two large gaps were cut through the canal at a point near the Chandler ranch and the water flowed down and across the farms. Much hay was in the shock and other fields were inundated and covered with mud and ' debris. Just as soon as word was received at the offices of the company at Sa-lina, Sa-lina, J. Larue Ogden, engineer for the company, immediately assembled forces and repair work was started. All available men and teams were put to work and an endeavor will be made to clos the gaps and have the water running in time to prevent pre-vent any shortage for the farmers who depend on this source for irrigating irri-gating purposes. Thursday of last week the company com-pany suffered another big loss when a flood of water from the adjoining hills near Vermillion wrecked the spillway and a portion of the retaining re-taining walls at the diversion dam. The entire spillway was wrecked and a gap estimated at 100 feet long and about fefteen feet deep was washed away in the retaining walls. Big forces of men and teams were set to work and Monday the work of repairing was completed and the water turned in. The canal had been almost filled w-hen the flood caused the break in the canal near Redmond. The retaining walls at the Vermillion Vermil-lion dam were replaced with concrete con-crete and the reinforcements will be more substantial, thus eliminating much of the danger that results from the cloudbursts that are frequent about this time of the year. Considerable Con-siderable cost has been attached to the two floods and the management is to be commended for the activities activi-ties shown in making the repairs, thus preventing any delay for the farmers in watering the farms along the line where the accidents occurred. |
