J Willie Hammer, an 11-year-old son of Benjamin Hammer, had an adventure lost week, while herding his father's Bheep over In the White river country, that came near proving fatal. The boy had been looking for grouse with a US-caliber US-caliber gun, and had just lain down on the ground to rest, when the sheep became be-came frightened, and on looking to see the cauBe of the commotion a huge cinnamon cin-namon bear was a few paces away facing fac-ing him. Willie fired the gun at the breast of the bear, which caused him to come for him. He turned to run, but had gone only a few Bteps when he stepped step-ped into a holo and fell, and on rising and looking around the bear was close to him, and, rising up on his hind legs, he seized him and commenced to squeeze him, stopping for breath, the boy all tho while trying to use a knife which he pulled from his pocket, but with no suo-cess, suo-cess, as his arms were held tightly above the elbow. ! At this critical time the dog came up ! and bit the bear, causing him to drop tho boy, which he did with a blow on the back of the head with his huge paw, knocking him BenseleBS. This was about 2 o'clock, and when he came to his senses it was about 5 o'clock. He then gathered up the sheep, which had become be-come badly scattered, and went to camp, his clothes nearly torn off and covered with blood, which, by the way, came from the bear, for the boy, though very sore and with head badly swollen, did not have a scratch on him.
