Show Escqlante Hews By Marlene Haws 826-4859 Congratulations to our four high school students who received Academic All-State awards all outstanding athletes. We are proud of them. We have some good kids. Angie Griffin went to Richfield and stayed with grandchildren for a week. Eldon and Mary Griffin went to bring her home. Jolyn Peterson, Payson, met them in Richfield for lunch and visiting.' They had an enjoyable day. Bob and Melanie Spencer came from Orderville last Thursday to spend a day with Bob's mother Loreta Spencer. Alan and Tresa Overall have a new baby boy who is a month old now but wasn't mentioned in our news before. His name is Justin Alan and he weighed in at 5 pounds 7 ounces at birth. Yukon Norman spent 10 days in Redmond with daughter and son-in-law Lana and Steve Roberts. Then Lana brought her home and stayed overnight. The daughters of Barbara Bar-bara Reid, Candy and Kisha Krause, Salina, came with Lana and accompanied accom-panied her back home. Kisha stayed with her grandparents Bill and Linda Overall; Candy stayed with her father Krause. Curtis Koyle is in Salt lake City this week for back surgery. He should be taking it easy for awhile. Word is that Kemp Spencer who now lives in Mesa, Ariz., has had some heart problems. Some of the horsemen report that he is well enough to have his wife Orpha drive him to the races one day last week. A baby shower was hosted at the home of Jolene Phillips by Jolene and Jill Phillips, and Sami, Sena and Mandy Barnson for Cassidy Barnson, wife of Dusty Barnson. Jeff Dunn is out and about again after having had surgery. Helen Shurtz and Ike Sevy paid a surprise visit to Stan and Jan Liston in St. George last week. They were really glad to see them. Jan was quilting with some friends when they got there, but they picked her up and went out shopping and had lunch together. Ike Sevy reports that Lynn Gates has had knee surgery in Mesa, Ariz., and that Lynn is already al-ready doing better and has less pain to contend with. He will have his . other knee done at a later date.. Marlene Haws visited with Mar-cie Mar-cie Kyle Christensen in the x-ray lab at the hospital in Cedar City last week. Her family is doing well, other than her daughter who was there to have her ankle x-rayed after twisting it. Marcie is doing her student teaching and will soon be qualified to teach school. Chris Baugh from Tropic was the technician techni-cian who ran Marlene's tests. Our condolences to the J. C. Haws family. J. C.'s brother Ben who grew up in Escalante passed away on Thursday of last week in Exeter, Calif. His services were held there on Tuesday. Vernon and Peg Roundy and Renon Reed went to St. George last week to visit their aunt Ruby Griffin. Gerald Black, Ruby's brother, bro-ther, was also there from Oregon. He will be staying with Ruby for awhile. The Sons of the Utah Pioneers (See ESCALANTE on page 7-A) ESCALANTE From Page 6-A held their monthly dinner meeting at the senior citizen center last Thursday evening. President Jerry Roundy was in charge. Bob Munson gave a report on his uncle Leo Munson who was the founder of the original Munson Grocery Store. The article was written by Leo's son Voyle Munson a few years ago. It appeared in one of the the Utah Historical Quarterly Magazines. Jerry Roundy reports that his -book entitled "Advised Them to Call the Place Escalante" is almost ready for publication and should be ready by June or July. He is looking for pictures of the Escalante Esca-lante CCC camps. Can anyone help him out? He needs one of the camp at the spring on the northeast corner of Escalante, and the one just below Posev Lake. Jerry also called to say that his brother Floyd Roundy passed away in a hospital in Logan. His funeral was held Feb. 23 in Menden. His wife Mila resides there. The Roundy's had two children, Rodney and Florene. Sue Bassett took Iona Alvey to Washington, Utah, where she will spend a week with her daughter and son-in-law Arvonne and Dee Whit-taker. Whit-taker. A large number of basketball fans had to make the choice to go to Wayne High School in Bicknell for the Sophomore Tournament or to St. george for Girls State basketball Tournament. I'll leave it up to John Yardley to tell you how they did, but we are really proud of our kids. Hyrum Coleman is still in the hospital in Salt lake City, but he is doing better. Dave and Raylene Whitefield, Las Vegas, Nev., came to spend the long weekend with Arnold and Deon Alvey. They all went to Loa on Sunday to see the new grandbaby, the daughter of Preston and Kristin Snedeger. |
