Photo: Trevor Underwood Sunday's mid-afternoon accident just north of Panguitch left one passenger critically crit-ically injured and life-flighted to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. The accident scene was stretched out over a quarter mile, the rear axle of a horse trailer shown in the foreground and the overturned Chevy Tahoe in the distant field. Serious Injuries Avoided; Testament To Seatbelts In Sunday Crash PANGUITCH - Both a tragic trag-ic and remarkable testament to wearing seatbelts was seen in an accident Sunday afternoon just after 2 p.m. involving a young engaged couple from Arizona. A 2003 Chevy Tahoe traveling travel-ing south on US89 about one mile north of Panguitch driven by Jeffrey Stowell, 22, of Gilbert, Ariz, collided with the rear axle of another vehicle as Stowell accidentally crossed over into oncoming traffic. He was wearing a seatbelt and rode out the accident with only minor injuries reported. Stowell's passenger and fiancee, Celeste Wahl, 20, of Mesa, Ariz., who apparently was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and later life-flighted to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. Paul Palmer. 55 of St. George, driving a 2000 Ford F250 pick-up, hauling a horse trailer, said at the scene that he "had done everything he could to get over, " but to no avail. After impacting the rear axle of Palmer's trailer, the Tahoe leftd the road and rolled one and one-half one-half times. Both ambulance and volunteer fire department members from Panguitch responded to the scene. According to UHP Sgt. Dan Ferguson who oversees Garfield and Kane counties, the accident was handled by Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Nate Gillins and the incident is an ongoing investigation. |
