Show Garfield County News Takes Honors At Press Convention ST. GEORGE The three generations of Thomas family women, owners of the Garfield County weekly Garfield County News, Katie Thomas, publisher; daughter Nancy Twitchell, editor; and granddaughter, Rebecca Bales, computer specialist; enjoyed the acclamation ac-clamation of fellow newspaper owners as they were awarded four honors at the recent Better Newspaper Newspa-per Contest of the Utah Press Association As-sociation Annual 108th Winter Convention held in St. George. The modest weekly took home coveted first place plaques for Best Editorial and Best News Story for 2000. In addition, the News took second place honors for Best News Photograph and Best Sports Photograph. Photo-graph. A new experience for the ladies this year and one to tell their grandkids, was the tribute paid the Garfield County News for submitting submit-ting the winning entry for "Screw Up of the Year". The News submitted sub-mitted its article following the 2000 Primary vote which declared in big headlines that those winning the Primary were "elected," when they actually still had to win the final fi-nal vote. The annual event sponsors workshops and seminars, hosts renowned re-nowned keynote speakers, the annual an-nual general membership meeting, and presents awards to distinguished recipients in the newspaper trade. Thomas noted another outstanding outstand-ing honor bestowed at the annual convention this year the recognition recog-nition of Richfield Reaper Publisher Pub-lisher Mark Fuellenbach as the winner of the Master Editor and Publisher Award. Fuellenbach was a previous owner of the Garfield County News and long time friend of the Thomas family. He was presented pre-sented the distinguished award by personal friend and publisher of the Sun Advocate Kevin Ashby at the UPA Past Presidents Awards breakfast. break-fast. Fuellenbach also comes from a family-owned newspaper tradition where his parents and grandparents have been honored in the Newspaper Newspa-per Hall of Fame. He is a past president of the Utah Press Association Associa-tion in 1981, with brother Kent Fuellenbach serving as president in 1986. Fuellenbach's Richfield Reaper has taken the award for General Gen-eral Excellence in 1958, 1961, 1966, 1968,. 1974 and 1976.
