Show Troopers To Focus On Child Safely For Holidays Section 10 of the Utah Highway Patrol which covers Sanpete, Sevier, Wayne, Piute, Garfield, and Kane Counties will be participating in Buckle-Up America Week and Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), May 21-28 and May 25-28, respectively. The two campaigns are designed to help motorists remember to drive safely, wear seat belts, and of utmost importance, to make sure that their children are restrained properly. Officers throughout the United States as well as in Canada participate in these campaigns throughout the year. Beginning May 21 and working through May 28, 2001, Section 10 troopers will be working overtime shifts to enforce seat belt and child-restraint child-restraint use. Troopers will also be working overtime shifts during the Memorial Day Weekend in an attempt to slow down traffic and hopefully save lives. The Utah Highway Patrol says that it's time for "Zero Tolerance" on child restraints because despite laws requiring children to ride buckled up in Utah and every other state, six out of 10 children killed in crashes are unbuckled. At least 50 percent of the deaths and injuries could have been prevented if drivers (See TROOPERS on page 5-A) TROOPERS From Front Page would have taken two minutes to buckle their children up. Most parents would lay down their own life to protect their children, but too often to have a problem taking two minutes of their time to make ceratin their children are properly restrained in child restraints. So, during the week and the upcoming holiday weekend, UHP says, "Look for the Beehive. We're going to be in your towns, on the . county roads, and on the interstate and it's our job to save lives." If you have any question about child restraints or need any help prior to your trip making sure your child restraint is properly installed, you may call and make an appointment at the Highway Patrol office at 896-2780. We'll be happy to check your seat to help you ensure your child's safety. |
