The 9-year-old winner took the 1-78 mile race in 3:15.3. Paul Mangum's Telon' Takes $50,0000 Purse At Phoenix When Pete Mangum's thoroughbred thor-oughbred "Felon" plunged across the finish line May 6 at Phoenix' popular Turf Paradise, there was a whopping $50,000 purse waiting for the proud owner, a Tropic native who has carried on the hobby he learned from his late father Harvey Mecham when Paul was just a boy. The Ireland-bred 9-year-old Felon completed the last big race of the season, the Hasta La Vista Handicap at 1 -78 miles, in 3:15.3, just one second off the track record. test when he raced ahead of the two horses that on Easter weekend took 1st and 2nd place when he came in 3rd! The May 6 race was the longest of the season after Felon previously ran I mile, 1-116 mile and 1-38 races, just working up to his final triumph. In his five races at Turf Paradise this season, Felon claimed three wins, a place and a show. Mangum's jockey on the eventful day was Chance Rollins of Vernal. Rollins was the leading jockey at Turf Paradise this season and took a quick break from warmer Phoenix to win a cool $125,000 race in California. Felon's trainers are Dennis and Ann Hall both of whom work for Mangum at his trail rides concession at Grand Canyon which he and wife Keela operate. Felon will spend the summer resting at pasture in Tropic before the Halls begin their training in September for next year's racing season. Mangum starting racing horses at small Utah tracks 36 years ago and it has remained his passion. He's raised a number of other winners over the years, starting with quarterhorses Jimbo's Maid in the 1960's, Mormon Bar and To Have To Win and thoroughbreds Pencil Me Blue and Crystal Blue Eyes, a big winner. Accompanying the Mangums to Phoenix for the big win were friends Dale and Phoebe Ray of Panguitch; Bill Brown, Fort Stockton, Stock-ton, Tex.; and Marie Richardson, Iraan, Tex. |
