Show (33 (sMGLiIljtteB Dorothy Lehman Myers PANGUITCH, Utah Dorothy Doro-thy Lehman Myers, 79, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2001 after a long illness. Dorothy was born at Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Mar. 21, 1922 to Dr. Cyril Lehman and his wife Bess McCowan Lehman. She earned a degree in elementary ele-mentary education at COE College in Cedar Rapids where she was a member of Chi Omega. She moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1947 to play professional softball with the A-l Queens and to earn her masters degree in education at Arizona State University. She was a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization through which she funded scholarships and room and board for young women attending college. Dorothy taught in the Tolleson School District and served there as a principal for several years. Realizing Real-izing that her real talent was for teaching young children, she moved to the Cartwright School District where she taught 4th, 5th and 6th grades and special classes for outstanding students for 20 years. Teaching was her greatest love. After retiring in 1985, she moved to Panguitch and took up woodworking as a hobby. Never self-seeking, Dorothy was a devoted Christian who gave anonymously and generously to many. She dearly loved her animals and treated them with love and kindness. She is survived by two sisters, Janet N. Lehman of Prescott, Ariz.; and Betty Anne (Vernon) Lawson of ESCALANTE Funeral services serv-ices for James W. "Jim" Smith were held Saturday, June 9, 2001 at the Escalante LDS Stake Center, with Myron D. Cottam officiating and Bishop Wade Barney presiding. The family prayer was offered by Warren M. Woolsey, an uncle, and prelude and postlude music was played by Susan Shurtz, a friend. The invocation was offered by Brett Reynolds, a nephew. Areola Gates, mother-in-law, and Karen Ott, a cousin, played an organ and " piano duet, "No Other Love." Tributes were given by Brent Cottam, Cot-tam, a cousin and friend, and sisters Barbara Paris and Dorothy Burk-hardt. Burk-hardt. Billie Dean Ellett, an aunt, sang, "How Great Thou Art," accompanied ac-companied by Karen Ott and Klin Chynoweth was a speaker. Remarks were made by Bishop Wade Barney and Dallas Larsen, son-in-law, sang "I Cross My Heart," accompanied by Lynn and Michael Griffin. The benediction was offered hv . - . 1 I 1 S . She was preceded in death by her mother and father and two brothers, C. Vera Lehman, Jr. and George R. Lehman. Funeral services will be held in Parowan on Monday, June 1 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the Assembly of Jesus Christ, 845 West 200 South. She will be buried next to logg-time logg-time friend Lois Green at the Parowan Paro-wan City Cemetery. Funeral services under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary, Mor-tuary, Cedar City. James W. Honorary pallbearers were Brandon Bran-don Larsen, Cameron Larsen, trey Larsen, George Paris, Austin Sorensen, Kolton Sorensen, Justin Gates, Dave Smart, Michael Alvarez, Al-varez, Chris Cronin, and all the youth that he has touched. The Honor guard was made up of the Escalante High School basketball bas-ketball players, present and past. Interment was held at the Escalante Esca-lante City Cemetery, where the dedication of the grave was offered by Russell Sorensen, a brother-in-law. Barnhurst LA VERKINHATCH Merlin Mer-lin S. Barnhurst, age 75, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away June 8, 2001 following a long illness. He -was born June 25, 1925 in Hatch to Orson H. and Maggie Sanders San-ders Barnhurst. He married Gloria Jean Shumway on Sept. 27, 1945 in the Manti LDS Temple. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. Merlin enjoyed his church calling with the youth in Sunday School. He loved working the land, raising cattle, and especially the country around Hatch. He worked in the automotive industry and enjoyed fixing up cars and trucks. He retired from Kennecott Copper as a heavy duty mechanic after 18 years of service. He was a very special man to all who knew him. We'll miss you "Papa", until Theron Karl 'Spurs' Griffin TROPIC Graveside services for Theron Karl "Spurs" Griffin were held Monday, June 11, 2001 in Tropic, with Bishop Scott Barton Bar-ton officiating. The family prayer was offered by Paul Miller and the invocation was offered by Kirk Chynoweth. A tribute was given by Nancy Walton and remarks were made by Gloria Hatch, Stan Mecham, Dona Dexter, and Bishop Scott Barton. The dedication dedi-cation of the grave was offered by Malen Mecham. Pallbearers were Alan Munson, Jerry Pollock, William Pollock, Sam Pollock, Bruce Haycock, Jim McDaniels, Kirk Chynoweth, Darr Hatch, Stan Pollock, and Paul Mil- ler. Merlin Barnhurst we meet again. Families can be together forever. Merlin is survived by his sweetheart sweet-heart of 56 years Jean Barnhurst; seven children Lorraine (Bob) Gibson Gib-son of Nebraska, Dallas (Le Ann) Barnhurst, Fredonia, Ariz.; Kevin (Kern) Barnhurst, Panguitch; Coll-ette Coll-ette Walton, Kanab; Merlin (Connie) (Con-nie) Barnhurst, Bluffdale; Regina (Burl) .Applegate, Fruitland, and Lenore (Brett) Johnson, Provo; brother Austin (Marie) Barnhurst of Mesquite, Nev.; sister Shirley Wil-helm Wil-helm of Hatch; 28 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter Susan; three brothers Dallas, Elbert and Melvin; and. brother-in-law Alvin Wilhelm. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 13, 2001 in the Hatch Utah LDS Chapel. Burial with military honors was in the Hatch Utah Cemetery under the direction of Mosdell Mortuary, Kanab |
