Show Escalante News By Marlene Haws 826-4859 The weekend brought a large number of visitors to town, and to church, for the blessing and naming of five babies; all boys! In the LDS Sacrament Meeting Sunday, the baby boy of Dirk and Eva Durfey was given the name Court Michael. Out-of-town relatives rela-tives attending were Eva's parents Bob and Karen Crosby, Alton; Eva's sister and husband Bert and Wendy Harris, Glendale and Dirk's sister and brother-in-law Lori and John Ahlstrom, Tropic. The son of Heather Smith was given the name Brendon James Smith. Spending this special day with them were grandparents Jim and Rae Smith, Henrieville; Pratt and Areola Gates, St. George; Russell and Carol Sorensen, St. George and Dallas Larsen, New Mexico. Also attending the meeting meet-ing were Brian and Cristy Stowe of Cedar City, who also visited with Brian's parents Stanley and Marlene Stowe. Paul and Laura Sorensen's son was given the name Shilo. His grandmother, Jeannie Davis, came from the second ward to be with them. In the second LDS Ward, the little son of Joe and Jolene Phillips was given the name Joseph Wyatt. Joe's parents Dennis and Gay Gay (not a misprint - both names are the same) and Joe's sister and brother in-law Lori and Jeff Hansen all came from Payson. Jolene's family, fam-ily, Arthur and Julie Lyman, Ivan and Dorothy Lyman, and Dell and Gladys LeFevre all came from Boulder and her brother Chad and sister-in-law Jamie Lyman came from St. George. Also friends from Kanab attended, J. R. and Lynette Jones. The son of Jim and Traci Wel-burn Wel-burn was given the name Cameron C. Jim's parents came all the way from Oceanside, Calif, for the occasion; occa-sion; Traci's twin sister and husband, hus-band, Tami and Dan Johnson came from Provo and Norene and Alan Rogers came from Cedar City. Bill and Clorene Vidrine went to Mountain Green for the blessing of their new grandson, Joshua, son of Greg and Rachel Vidrine. Janalee Bernardo took daughter Heather Spencer to Panguitch for x-rays x-rays on her knee following a tubing accident. She was referred to another an-other doctor in St. George and will be going back there periodically for follow-up treatment. Former residents Wayne and Cristine Button have their son, Ben, in the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. After trying to offer assistance as-sistance to some Mexican tourists, he was badly beaten by them and left by the roadside to be discovered by the UDOT employees operating snow plows. We extend our very best to them and wish Ben a speedy recovery. Rhett Shakespear, Cedar City, brother of Ed Shakespear, was in town last week doing some real estate es-tate business with Quinn and Doneen Griffin. At the high school, Zach Fudge finished fourth in the region in wrestling competition. Coach Jim Welburn and assistant coaches Dave Orton and Greg Christensen took him to the state tournament. Three alternates also went. They were Tony Peterson, John Spencer and Andy Barnson. Wallace Woolsey has been suffering suf-fering from a broken ankle. The doctors fused it together and he now has a cast on it and is walking, very gingerly, on crutches. He goes back to the doctor again on the Feb. 28 to see what they will want to do with it next. Dudley and Hazel Spencer say they took a whirlwind trip to Arizona. Ari-zona. It sounded to me like the whirlwind touched down in quite a few places. First, they visited in Quartzite with Hazel's daughter and son-in-law Karen and Jess Williams. Wil-liams. On to Mesa, they saw Dudley's Dud-ley's brother Kemp and Orpha Spencer. Then they checked on Hazel's Ha-zel's sister and brother-in law, Sue and Edward Ritter in Sun City, and, somewhere along the line, hooked up with Bob and Mavis Munson for an evening of western music entertainment. enter-tainment. On their return trip they stopped in St. George to shop, attend at-tend and LDS temple session, had eye doctor appointments and got acquainted ac-quainted with their newest greatgrandchild, great-grandchild, Kendra, daughter of Roy and Megan Bowling. Whew! I'd have to practice some before I could keep up with them! Ike Sevy reports that Lynn and Mildred Gates came from Mesa, Ariz, to attend the funeral service for Alpine Shirts in Cedar City. Lynn has been suffering from some allergies but was able to make the trip. We hope he and Mildred get well soon so they can come back and get started on their new house! Fay Alvey says her son-in-law, Anthony Coombs, will be in therapy ther-apy for another thirty days or so, at the Utah Valley Medical Center. He will not be returning to Boulder but instead will go to Manila with his wife, Dot. Anthony was in a serious car accident a month or so ago. Robert and Daisha Randal are in the process of moving here from Salt Lake City. They have a daughter, Alisa, who is in the 6th grade. Robert is the brother of Kim Randal. Phyllis Alvey took her mother, Elda Haws, to Kaysville to spend a few days with Ray and Lois Barney. They visited with Elda's sister, Elsie El-sie Fitts in Salt Lake and kept a doctor appointment. Vernon Porter, Mt. Pleasant, visited with friends and relatives on Monday. He and a friend were out on a sight-seeing tour that lead through Escalante. John Imlay came from Cedar City to spend the weekend with his folks, Frances and Barbara Imlay. It wasn't one of their better weekends week-ends as they all had the flu. Vaunie Richins is not too old yet to perform some acrobatics! She fell out of her back door and pulled everything loose in her shoulder. While that was still healing heal-ing she had to go in1' for some surgery. sur-gery. But she says she's doing good for the shape she's in! |
