Show ,,,,,,1,, ?rv. -A j-. . . i"Ti. i x Megan Fischer, 7-year-old daughter of Joe and Leniece Fisher, Panguitch, with her aunt Annette Heywood, Panguitch visited the Panguitch Library and stopped to see the winning posters for the Miss Garfield County project on drug and alcohol abuse prevention, done by the elementary students, sponsored by Laura Pierson, the reigning Miss Garfield County. Miss Garfield County Laura Pierson Completes Project PANGUITCH The reigning Miss Garfield County, Laura Pier-son Pier-son selected a community service project to complete during her reign that has centered on the youth of Garfield County. Pierson's platform plat-form as Miss Garfield has been "The Choices You Make and How , They Affect Others." The main focus of her project was teaching youth that the choices . they make now relating to alcohol and drugs affect them all of their life. Pierson contacted several guest speakers arranging for them to make presentations at all three Gar- ' field County high schools. Those speakers included Tad Whittaker who works with the Kane County ' Sheriffs Department and her husband, hus-band, Russ Whittaker, a Utah !i Highway Patrol Officer. Also presenting were Kenny Roberts, an 18-year old former youth offender and inmate who had a history of crime since the age of 14 and is now reformed and serving in the U.S. Army. Roberts had a tremendous impact at each location he spoke. Pierson herself spoke at each assembly and dedicated this entire project to her father, Ray Lynn Pierson, a Utah Highway Patrol Trooper killed in the line of duty. Pierson conducted poster contests con-tests at each area elementary with winners at each grade level receiving receiv-ing monetary prizes. Teacher at Panguitch Elementary, Elemen-tary, Marilyn Bulkley wrote Pierson Pier-son and supportive thank you letter in which she called the project "outstanding." "out-standing." Bulkley expressed that she "hoped to see the program continued con-tinued year to year and that it helped not only children but whole families." fami-lies." Pierson is currently attending Snow College in Ephraim and will compete both for Miss Utah June 15-20 and Miss Utah State Fair in September. The 1998 Miss Garfield County competition will be held Aug. 13 and will be the kick-off event for this year's Garfield County Fair. The event will be held at Bryce Valley High School auditorium at 7 p.m. Applications will be accepted from girls 17-24 through July 1. |
