Show Escalante Kids Make Christmas Presents ESCALANTE Sixth graders at Escalante Elementary have been busy making Christmas ceramics for parents and friends, with some beautiful results for Christmas giving and a particularly bright spot under the Christmas tree. The youngsters, under the direction of Carol Simons, half-day teacher who has been instructing them in the how-to of ceramics, have created some unusual pieces. The students began their projects last week with the pouring of "slip" into molds, waiting a brief period and then pouring the molds out to leave a hollow center. They carefully smoothed out their molded pieces after removing them from the molds and allowed the green-ware green-ware to dry before painting and placing it in the kiln at the community com-munity center. Upon removal, the crafted piece was at the "bisque" stage", and ready for more painting and decorating. Some added special glazes and gold and silver before the final trip to the kiln. Excited youngsters have not only learned a new skill but added to Santa's pack for the Escalante area. The sixth graders are also taught by Principal Hal Shurtz for the remaining half-day of each day. |
