Show Garfield's Scenery Gets I Wide Publicity In Bay Area Newspaper Story In the Winter '86 edition of the Utah Travel Council booklet "The Utah Traveler," an article from The . Oakland (California) Tribune, May 11, 1986 is quoted. In "A View from the Hog's Back" ; author Roger Rappaport says, "In Garfield County, Utah, they call Route 12 a highway. You could look : at it that way. But there are stret-' stret-' ches on this route linking Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef's National ; Parks that would probably give an ; Outward Bound leader pause. Picture driving down a narrow ridge ; with 1,000-feet cliffs on both sides and you get the general idea. Guard rails? Are you kidding?" The striking bit of Garfield County f scenery elicited a typical reaction from Rappaport whose comment j reflects a not uncommon one from J tourists through the area. Residents I of Boulder who regularly travel the ! Hogs Back stretch of Highway 12 and whose children travel it daily by school bus might be equally awed by : a trip over the San Francisco- Oakland Bay Bridge in Rappaport 's ; home territory. A Utah Travel Council ongoing s'udy started in April which will conclude in September 1987, says 'hat interviews conducted during he early part of this study show that 52 percent of visotors say that Utah was the furtherest point they would reach on their trip. Twenty-one percent said they were from California and Nevada. On a scale from one (not satisfied) o five (extremely satisfied), visitors rated their vacation experience ex-perience at 4.62. On a scale of one to five, visitors rated the friendliness of the people at 4.67. On a scale of one to five, visitors rated the state's scenic attractions at 4.81, and 31 percent said the state's scenic beauty was the main reason for coming. |
