Show The Valley Buffaloes defeated Mt. Vernon Academy for the Boys State 1A Championship last Saturday Satur-day at the Centrum in Cedar City. In so doing, Valley becomes the first 1A school to win both the boys and girls championships in the same year. The girls won the 1A title in February. Valley, led coaches Jim Hoyt and Andy Crofts, had an easy time in the final, 58-40 over the Patriots. In the view of most fans, the championship game was played Friday night in the semi-finals as Valley bested Piute by a score of 65-57. That was probably the best game of the tourney with the best two teams playing. Valley was the best team, simply because they played the finest defense and rebounded re-bounded better than any other team on a consistent basis. Congratulations Congratula-tions to Valley. As for the Garfield County teams. ..Escalante played all four days, defeating Green River 86-58 and Bryce Valley 78-67, finishing eighth. Panguitch and Bryce Valley each recorded one win in the finals, with the Mustangs beating Tabiona 74-65 and the Bobcats stopping Dugway 63-56. All three teams lost the first day, Escalante lost a game that was most likely a case of looking past an early opponent, 59-51 59-51 to Mt. Vernon. The momentum of that first win carried the Patriots clear into the final in the somewhat weaker lower bracket. Panguitch had a chance to beat the highly touted Rich team, before losing 51-48. Bryce Valley lost to Rowland Hall 71-62 after David Shakespear injured an ankle and could not play the final half. Bryce Valley has had a year they would like to forget with injuries grabbing more headlines than the games themselves. The final standings for 1993 in 1A were as follows: Valley, Mt. Vernon, Piute, Rowland Hall, Wendover, Monticello, Duchesne, and Escalante. Piute's final day win over Rowland Hall, 92-73, was as good as you will see on our level offensively, as they scored 60 first half points. Thanks to all the teams, fans and communities for your interest in basketball this season. Hope you have enjoyed our reports in the "News." |
