Show Chip-Seal Work Underway On U-95 Beginning Monday, June 13, a Utah Department of Transportation maintenance crew will be doing chip seal work on the ten-mile section sec-tion of State Route 95 from the junction of SR-276 (to Hall's Crossing) east to near the junction of SR-275 in San Juan County. It's estimated it will take one to two weeks to complete the work. This work will cause considerable consider-able traffic interference and will necessitate ne-cessitate restricting traffic to only one lane where work is being done. Flaggers will help direct traffic through the construction zone. A restrictive speed limit of 25 MPH will be posted for several weeks on the project because pebbles can be loosened from the new asphalt layer and thrown onto cars and trucks by vehicles traveling faster than 25 MPH. Chip sealing is undertaken on many roads, generally with low to moderate traffic volumes, about every ev-ery five years. It involves spraying liquid asphalt on the highway surface sur-face then spreading and rolling aggregate ag-gregate or small gravel chips into the asphalt material, after which the excess chips are swept off. The asphalt seals the highway surface to inhibit air and moisture deterioration and extends the life of the highway, and the chips provide a skid-resistant finish. This com- paratively low-cost preventive maintenance helps avert a more extensive ex-tensive and costly resurfacing project. pro-ject. Several other chip seal projects are planned for highways in southeastern south-eastern Utah this summer. |
