Show Zion Tunnel Now Open During Night Supt. Harold L. Grafe announced that effective February 15, 1985, the Zlon-Mt. Carmel Tunnel has been reopened at night. The tunnel had been closed from 9 p.m. to 7 a.,m. Sunday through Thursday so that major construction activity, could take place to ensure tunnel stability and safety. "The major protion of the work is now finished," said Grafe, "but the public can still expect interrmlttent delays through March during the day so that finishing touches, can be done on the monitoring system." Delays should not be long, but interested parties may call the park for any additional information. Grafe stated that the local users of the road that passes through the park have been most understanding for the inconvenience it has caused to have it entirely closed. "We appreciate the cooperation shown by everyone," he" said. ' The dead-end road up Zion Canyon to the Lodge is still under heavy construction, and will continue to have traffic delays on it. That four mile stretch of road will be totally re-surfaced following the installation of a sewer line and un-dergrounding of power and telephone lines up to the Lodge. Park officials are still optimistic that construction will be far enough along to cause little Interference with the scheduled opening of the Lodge on May 10. |
