Show Bryce Valley Slips Past Escalante, Bobcats Win By John Yardley The Bryce Valley Mustangs upped their league record by a game last Friday night by stopping Escalante 64-60 at Tropic. In a non-league game, Panguitch popped Parowan by. 65-56 on the road. At Tropic, BV jumped out to a 18-9 lead and then just kept on rolling. The Mustangs led 37-23 at half-time behind the balanced scoring of the Feltner brothers, Charles Henry, Sean Stewart and Bryce Sryett. The second half was more of the same, until near the end when the Moquis.were forced to foul and BV missed some free throws. For the third time this past month, the Mustangs shot considerably fewer foul shots than did their opposition. Coach Calre Ramsay must feel "snake-bit" as Escalante shot 24 of 34 from the line while the home team hit on only 6 of 15. Escalante had - some pretty balanced scoring themselves with Clint Porter hitting 23, Matt Liston 12 and Rick Crawford and David Reid canning 10 each. Coach Jim Smith's squad scored nearly as many points in the final period as they tallied in the first three. Again, they just came out with too little, too late. Leading the scoring parade for BV were Charles Henry and Trent Feltner, ripping in 15 each, Tim Feltner with 14 and Sean Stewart notching 11. At Parowan, Panguitch had a big second quarter, scoring 24 points after only hitting 8 in the opening stanza to edge 32-30 at half-time. Heath Sartini, Dave Ipson and Wayne Sawyer took it inside for PHS and combined for 43 for the Bobcats 65 points. Sartini continued his blitze of opposing defenses with 25 points. Over the past six weeks, Sartini has played as well as any postman in the region. Ipson scored 10, Nate Brinkerhoff 10, and Sawyer hit for 8 along with Tony Knighton. Knighton and Steve Burton played important roles in the victory with their ball handling and hustle. Coach Brian McAllister now takes his 6-9 team to Gunnison this week to meet the powerful Bulldogs who knocked off second place North Sevier for the second time last week. Piute slipped past Wayne in their closest league game 73-69. |
