Show Additional Procedures Possible With New Hospital Microscope With the addition of the Richards Operating Microscope to the growing list of acquisitions of pew operative and diagnostic equipment at Garifled Memorial Hospital, hospital personnel are now able to perform operative procedures that . were heretofore denied them. The new microscope is a high quality stereoscopic instrument designed specifically for modern microsurgical techniques. Dr. E. Terry Henrie of GMH in explaining the instrument made note of the variety of uses for which the piece of equipment can be used. Among these are microsurgery of all kinds, the repair of fallopian tubes, cardiac surgery, arterial grafts, coronary by-pass procedures, ear problems and nerve end repairs. Henrie pointed out that these surgical areas can still be handled without the microscope but that the unit is a great advance and will be utilized to its utmost. He said that the microscope has been at the hospital for several months and has been used at least six times. Henrie also said that the microscope has an enlargement .factor of 40. In demonstrating the instrument he magnified a sample of penmanship that looked extremely sharp and neat. Under magnification the penmanship resembled a rough piece of rag. One distinct advantage of the new optical instrument is that, all heat producing and electrical components of the lighting system are located well above the surgical field In the solid-state power module., Thus; the" "surgical field remains cool, tissue drying time is substantially increased, and the surgeon remains more comfortable in his work which adds to patients' comfort and well being and brings greater healing opportunity as well. One further advantage of the unit is that it can be utilized for phorography if the surgeon feels that a visual operating record should be kept. One of the most common uses for the instrument has been in the treatment of the common persistent earache in children. E. Terry Henrie, M.D. works over small patient at Garfield Memorial Hospital with new electronic steroscopic microscope that is being used in 1 ' ' WWHH various forms of microsurgery. New equipment now allows procedures to be performed at the hospital not previously-possible. |
