Show Cancer Clinics Coming Garfield County Areas Participants in the Southwest Health District Cancer Screening Program will be receiving reminders that their annual Pap smears are due again according to Panguitch Public Health Nurse Jan Frandsen. The Utah Cancer Screening and Control Program was established in 1976 to provide cancer screening for women, particularly those in high-risk groups. A total of 42,208 women have been screened with the majority of Pap tests proving negative. A class 11, though a negative finding, is followed up every six months. Immediate follow-up was advised for the 223 clients who have had 11a, lib or IV findings. State and health department nurses do active follow-ups on these important clients, said Frandsen. In 1982-83, 1,870 Utah women had abnormal blood pressure findings, 705 had abnormal breast findings and 568, abnormal pelvic findings. Seven-hundred-fifteen women were advised to obtain six month repeat smears, 35 were advised to obtain repeat smears in three months, and 11 were advised to seek immediate attention. All those with abnormal findings are referred to private physicians. Program sponsors recommend that women have a professional breast examination annually and perform their own breast self- examinations monthly. The cure rate for cervical cencer is 100 percent if a cervical cytologic smear is done every year. Health education is a vital part of cancer screening with new subject discussed each year. Fees for participation in the screening are charged on a sliding scale with most currently paying a small fee. Early detection can provide life-saving cures with all women over age 18 advised to have annual examinations. Screening for the Panguitch-Hatch area will take place April 26 at the Panguitch LDS Stake Center. Appointments may be made by calling the Public Health Office at 676-8800, Jan Frandsen at 676-2792 or Loraine Allen at 676-2354. Screening for the Bryce Valley area will be held at the Bryce Valley Clinic in Cannonville April 27, and for the Escalante-Boulder area at the Kazan Memorial Clinic in Escalante May 3. Appointments for either area may be made by calling Sheri Woolsey at 826-43590 or 826-4397.
