Show Bruce I ley wood Heywood Takes Garfield Deputy Post Newest deputy to be named to the Garfield County Sheriff's department is Bruce Niel Heywood, 37, Panguitch who has been serving as dispatcher with the department since October. Heywood, a graduate of Panguitch High School, served a mission for the LDS Church in the Eastern States Mission. He attended ' Southern Utah State College in Cedar City, graduating in industrial technology. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1971, became an officer and pilot and was stationed in Pensacola, Florida. He was transferred to San Diego as part of a helicopter squadron. He participated in two West Pac cruises aboard the USS Coral Sea, an aircraft carrier. He was in combat in Vietnam and Cambodia. He was transferred to Keflavic, Iceland where he was assistant operations officer and search and rescue mission coordinator for the commander of the Iceland Defense Forces for two years. He received the President's Meritorious Service Medal for saving 45 lives through his efforts directing search and rescue. Later he was- transferred to the Naval Air Station at Fallon, Nevada for another two years with search and rescue. He returned to Panguitch in 1980 and took over management of the Central Utah Insurance Agency where he remained until accepting his new position with the sheriff's department. After accepting the dispatcher's job last October, Heywood found that it rekindled his interest in search and rescue and active law enforcement. When a vacancy on the department occurred, he applied and with his acceptance, will be rotating his time among Ticaboo, Pangmtch, Pai.'uitch Lake and Antimony. He will proabauly attend the academy in October. Heywood married the forgaer Rita Mellor of Fayette. They have five children: Heather, 12; Heidi, 10; Timothy, 6; Robert, 3, and Holly, Hi. |
