Southern Utahns Take Advantage Of Forest Products Each year more people in Southern Utah take advantage of free or low cost forestry products on public lands. During 1981, the Cedar City District, of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issued several thousand permits for these products. The greatest demand was for free use firewood permits. The cutting of nearly 20,000 cords of wood was authorized during the year. The second most important forestry product was Pinyon Pine Christmas trees. More than 3,000 families obtained permits to cut their tree on public lands this year. Major commercial uses included fence posts and pine nuts. Permits were issued for some 19,000 posts and over 10,000 pounds of pine nuts. Since gathering pine nuts for personal use does not require a permit, the number of pounds of nuts harvested for this use is not available. Permits for personal use firewood are available free of charge at any BLM office in Southern Utah. There is a nominal fee for permits to harvest fence posts, Christmas trees, commercial pine nuts and commercial firewood. These permits are avialable from BLM offices in Cedar City, Escalante, Kanab and St. George. |
