Show Graduation Requirements Discussed Revision of high school graduation requirements was discussed at thee he Panguitch-Hatch High school PTSA meeting as curriculum director Alden Balck met with parents, teachers and students. The importance of relating subject matter to life was stressed and the growing feeling that the need exists to stiffen requirements for graduation. Particularly noted was the frequently unproductive senior year where students who have, though diligence, completed almost all graduation requirements by their junior year and can thus spend almost their entire senior year on elective classes that may not keep them at a high point of readiness for college entrance. Black talked to parents about the school district's Individual Education Plan under which each student has his educational needs assessed and curriculum planned and updated to his particular requirements. Black noted that emphasis will most likely be placed on strengthening requirements while at the same time planning a flexibility that will permit adaptation for each student throughout his high school career with twice-a-year counseling with parents and advisors. Plans for a consumer math class were outlined as well as a new class on responsible adulthood. Black said the new outline for revision of graduation requirements for the school district will most likely be presented to the school board at its February meeting. |
