Show Youngsters Learn Voting Duties TROPIC Second garders at Bryce Valley Elementary are leanring about their civic responsibilities at an early age. As- a special unit of their social studies, they learned how to register to vote, set up a special election and voted in a voting booth. The students recently invited town registrar Viva Mecbam into their classroom to teach them about the need for registration and how to go about registration. The students then completed registration forms for a classroom election. Teacher Vicki Jensen assembled a red, white and blue voting booth for election day, After registraiton with a selected registrar, registration slips and ballots were numbered. Names were checked off correctly as each student participated in the voting process. Votes were tabulated by students who acted as election judges. Among issues on the ballot was the selection of which foreign countries to study in the coming months. Of the foreign countries listed on the ballot, the children selected six. They will study England, Japan-Korea, Scotland, Germany, Australia with Russia and Italy tied for final spot. The students decided they wanted to do their part to "help their community be a better place to live" by doing some type of service. Since it was snowy out in the community, they decided to help their community by helping their shcool. They approached a school custodian for project suggestions. Two were placed on the ballot. Cleaning and dusting the coat racks won hands down over dusting and cleaning window sills. Places were also made on the ballots for write-ins for clean-up projects and for foreign countries to study. In coming weeks students will attempt to extend themelves "beyond their own community," by becoming familiar with the peoples and traditions of other lands. |
