Show 5 5"',; Cats Finally Edge Bryce Team In 1-0 Baseball Game 'Classic' By John Yardley Panguitch and Bryce Valley played a classic baseball game last Friday in Pannultch, battling seven tougn innings before finally settling 1-0 with Panuitch on top. It was a pitching duel supreme between Donny Leach for the Bobcats andDallin Baugh, the ace for the Mustangs. Each pitcher held the opposing team in check on just five hits total for the game. The only score for the Bobcats came when sophomore Nate Brinkerhoff singled, moved to second on a passed ball, then eventually scored on another passed ball. In the seventh, Bryce Valley, as they have all year, made a valiant late comeback. With Thompson on second base and one out, Ott drove a ball deep to left field, but Mark Owens finally got under it for the out. The final batter, Chynoweth, lifted a long one into right field that Korry Soper snatched at the fence for the final out of the game. Coaches Kay Englestead and Pat Dix of Panguitch felt very fortunate. "Defense saved our team. Leach struck out 13, despite five walks, but Baugh was just great, too, giving up only two walks, one of which was Intentional," stated Englestead. As for Coach Clare Ramsay and his Mustangs, this writer sees them as the most underrated team in the region. They make the most out of their talent and with one run here or there, could've been right in the thick of things in the Region chase. Nationally, the Division titles were claimed in Major League baseball last week. The California Angels and the St. Louis Cards put their titles away early in the week, but Milwaukee went to the last day of the season to put back the Orioles Sunday in Baltimore. In San Diego, the Atlanta Braves won the division in the NL west as they lost to the Padres, but the Dodgers also lost in San Francisco and thus the Brave's one-game lead was enough to hold the championship. Earlier in the week, the Braves had beaten the Dodgers 4-3 in 12 innings at LA which turned out to be the critical win for them.. The Dodgers fell into a horrible season-ending slump, losing nine of their last 11 games. |
