Show Utah Highway Patrol Wins 'Best Dressed' Police Award The Utah Highway Patrol has been named the Best Dressed Police Department of 1982 in the annual awards competition sponsored by the National Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors (NAUMD). In a ceremony at the State Capitol, the Utah Highway Patrol received a $300.00 cash award and a plaque attesting to their achievement. The Utah Highway Patrol will donate the moneyto the Primary Children's Hospital. NAUMD executive Director Bernard J. Lepper, said that the association sponsors the nationwide program to recognize police departments that maintain the highest standards of uniform dress. The program is now in its fifth year. "All departments entering the contest, were asked to submit photos of officers in uniform and a brief explanation of why they felt they should be considered best dressed," said Mr. Lepper. All entries were judged on the basis of whether the uniform projected a neat, favorable image; provided im-meiribic recognition and identification as police personnel; projected the authority and professionalism of the department; provided comfort, protection from physical attack and protection from the weather; was coordinated with outerwear, accessories, caps and equipment; and the method of accountability used to assure good uniformed appearance. According to the judges, the Utah Highway Patrol received the top honor for the outstanding manner in which its uniform program exemplifed the above criteria. The winter and summer uniforms consist of an trousers, dark brown shirts, and dark brown campaign hats. In the winter tan ties and felt hats are worn. In the summer, the hat is straw. For dresa occasions officers wear a white shirt, black tie and dark brown blouse with shoulder strap and garrison belt with accessories. "We are very proud of our uniform and are delighted to have it recognized by this award," said Colonel Dennis J. Nordfelt. "The Utah Highway Patrol has a very strict uniform and appearance policies but we seldom have to enforce them. Our officers take pride in the tradition of this department, part of which is to look sharp at all times. There is a high level of espirit de corps among our officers and individual appearance standards are excellent." The judges of the Best Dressed Police Department competition were Lt, Arthur Jacobs and Sgt. Jack Becaccio , of the Police Equipment Bureau of the New York City Police Department; Scott Kingwill, publisher of Law ana Order Magazine; and Professor Edward Goldstein, of the Fashion Institute of Technology. Top honors also went ot the Marion County Sheriff's Department, Indianapolis, Indiana, named Best Dressed County police Department, and the Eager, Arizona Police Department, winner of the title of Best Dressed City Police Department.
