Show U. S. Jaycees Awarded For Muscular Dystrophy Work For the second consecutive year, the United States Jaycees has won first place In the Jaycee International's Humanitarian Services Awards program for work in behalf of the Muscular 'Dystrophy Association (MDA), Norton Hill, president of the Utah chapter of the national volun- ' tary health agency, announced. The award was presented to Gene Honn, president of the U.S. Jaycees, at the organization's World Congress meetings held in Berlin. "We're delighted that the U.S. Jaycees has been recognized for its outstanding contribution to the fight against muscular dystrophy and related diseases," Hill said. "The Jaycees has been an invaluable member of the MDA team," he added, "and we are deeply grateful for its members help." The U.S. Jaycees, a national young men's leadership organization, has been working with MDA since 1977 In sponsoring a wide range of fund-raising activities to benefit the national health agency, including canister collections, auctions, and sporting events. Jaycees from throughout Utah, including Gunnison and North Sevier, sponsored fun events which raised near ly $9,000. During the association's 1981 telethon, Honn presented MDA national chairman, Jerry Lewis, with a check for $2.1 million, representing funds collected during the 1981 drive. MDA is dedicated to the conquest of 40 neuro-muscular diseases through an unparalleled worldwide research effort, a nationwide program of medical services, and far-reaching professional and public health education services. The association currently sponsors 10 university-based research-clinical centers in the U.S. and England and some 600 individual research pro-' jects worldwide. It also supports 241 outpatient clinics throughout the U.S., where people with neuromuscular diseases receive medical services, orthopedic aids and related services at no direct cost to them and with no means test required! MDA serves people throughout Utah. Their main clinic is located at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. |
