Show Now He Can Spell 'Banjo' Peter Frandsen, 14, will never torget how to spell "banjo". It was the word which tied him up at the annual Deseret News spelling bee in Salt Lake City recently. Young Peter, who-has been blind since birth, was mortified to be disqualified by misspelling such a simple word when he had practiced so hard to memorize hundreds of words far more difficult. Peter had completely memorized a list of 500 words to win his place in the state competition. A list of 1020 more new words were added for the state competition which Peter received two or three weeks before the contest. Jay Proctor accompaneid Peter to Salt Lake City for the spelling bee but losing the contest was only a temporary disappointment for him. After the competition Peter went shopping for the organ for which he had saved his money for years and which he had dreamed about since he was a little boy. Peter said he felt bad about losing on such a simple word but he,particularly enjoyed the television interviews that followed the contest where TV cameras focused on the determined and talented young blind boy whose handicap has failed 'to prevent him from participating In life to Its fullest. |
