Show New Home Ec Teacher ut Bryce Valley TROPIC - Multi-talented Dowanna Williams, Bryce Valley's new home economics teacher has adapted well to the often challenging and unique requirements of a small high shcool. And she feels that "This is where I ought to be; I couldn't have picked a better place!" Teachers in small schools are frequently called upon to fill a variety of rolls as opposed to the teacher in a large big-city high school who may teach solely in one specialized narrow Held. Trained in home economics at which she excells, Miss Williams has found that her hobbies and other skills have been a boon to enable her to function in many different capacities at Bryce Valley High School. A skilled musician, she played flute for one year with the Cougar marching band at Brigham Young University and trombone for another two years. While a member of the band, she participated in two Holiday Bowls in San Diego and had an oportunity to march with the band at Disneyland. In addition to her duties as junior class advisor and Future Homemakers of America advisor she lends her experience as drill team coordinator and cheerleader coordinator. Enthusiastic about her first year at teaching, Miss Williams says she has appreciated most of all the support from her principal, Lowell Mecham and his staff. The 24-year-old Dowanna Williams Oklahoma native graduated from Putnam City, Oklahoma High School and went on to spend two years at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho studying home economics. While at the Rexburg college she served as representa--tive to Associated Women Students (AWS) her first year there and as an officer of that group the second year. She also worked as a reporter during her two years at Ricks. She transferred to BYU for an additional four years of study where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree with a composite major in home economics, graduating in August of this year. After getting a glimpse of southern Utah when she visited friends in St. George, she fell so in love with the scenery and the people that taking her first teaching position here seemed the logical thing to do. She plans to structure a class next year around the boys, a class called "Bachelor Living" which is designed to introduce boys to many of the classic situations they will run into out on their own such as ironing, cooking, washing and other skills boys often fail to learn under normal conditions. |
