The project, to be located in Garfield County about 30 miles east of Bryce Canyon National Park, includes the community of Escalante and the agricultural lands owned by the New Escalante Irrigation Co. The first phase of the project will be a pressure irrigation system, regulation pond and pump plant. The second phase will be the construction of Escalinte's secondary water system for lawn and garden use. In January of this year, the board authorized the project of $1.95 million. The project is to be purchased from the Board over a 35-year period, amounting to about $93,000 a year. The commitment is contingent on the irrigation company paying off financial assistance given by the Farmer's Home Administration for the construction of Wide Hollow Dam to obtain clear title once again to the water rights. Those water rights will be assigned to the Board for the current project. |
