Show Contest Seeks Alternate Energy Sources Junior high school students in 10 southern Utah counties have been invited to enter a contest sponsored by Telluride Division of Utah Power and Light Co., in an effort to learn more about alternate energy sources. Anna Rae Johnson, customer service representative and Margaret Oler, home energy advisor in Telluride Division are co-chairmen of the contest which is open to all seventh, eighth and ninth grade students in the region. "The objective of the contest is to encourage conservation of conventional energy through the utilization of alternate energy sources," Mrs. Johnson said. "Utah Power encourages development of alternate renewable energy systems such as solar, geo thermal, wind, low-head hydro, biogas-methane to provide energy for homes, businesses and farms." Deadline for entering the contest is Feb. 1, 1982. First, second and third place winners will receive Utah Power and Light Co. stock, along with trophies and ribbons. In addition, a cash award of $100 will be presented to the school of the first place winner; $175 to the second place winner's school and $50 to the third place winner's school. Cash awards will be given in the students' names and be earmarked for puchase of energy curriculum materials. Miss Oler identified an alternate energy project as working or non working model and or illustration. If it is a model, if must not weigh over 125 pounds and be able to pass through a two foot eight inch by six foot eight inch door. Projects must be the work of the contestants, and there may be up to three contestants enter one project as a team. Cost of the project must not exceed $100. The judging will be based on originality of concept; practicability of application; contestants' ability to orally explain the project's function and the quality of workmanship in the project. Preliminary judging will be in February, with final judging in March. Winners will be announced the first part of April and awards the last of that momnth. School districts in the following counties are eligible to enter in the Telluride Division contest: Sevier, Sanpete, Garfield, Millard, Beaver, Iron, Kane, Piute, Wayne, Washington.
