Show Editorial . . . School Plan Needs Support of Public : The Garfield County School Board has approved a plan for the teachers schedule for 1977-78 and it is now up to the teachers, parents, students and administrators' cooperative attitude as to whether the plan will work or not. No amount of complaining from the public or teachers will change the decision of the board. Superintendent Kerry Nelson did not have to ask the opinion of the public and teachers about his first proposal. He could have just submitted it to the school board for their vote then sent letters to those involved stating what changes were going to be made for the 1977-78 school year. But he did ask for their input and because of this input the original plan was changed to include many of the suggestions handed in, giving everyone a chance to have a voice in the final product. It must be pointed out at this time that no matter how much effort is put into another plan everyone cannot be pleased. So now that this plan has been adopted it is lip to the public as to how successful the program vorks. The district administration and school board spent a great deal of time and effort and contacted specialists from the State Baord of Education in helping them to work this plan out so they could come up with the best solution to the problems of fewer students and less money to run the district for the coming year. One of the main concerns voiced by the teachers is the traveling included in the schedule. In speaking to the teachers in the district that now travel, they do not feel this is a problem nor has travel hindered their performances as teachers. In fact some have said this has become a very special time to them because it gives them time to think and plan. Following the first board meeting, Wednesday, Feb. 9, a community development meeting was held. More than one-half of the people that had sat through the board meeting because of their concern about the decision, got up and left without finding out what they could do to help handle this and future problems of the school district. By becoming involved and by following the State Board of Education's suggestions on becoming involved, everyone will be able to help work out this and future problems the Garfield County School district will encounter, All this will be possible with community effort. If we are asked to work on committees in the community involvement program, let's not turn anyone down. Let's accept the challenge, let's all do our share in helping to solve future problems of Garfield County School district. |
