Show Major Changes Made in Teacher Schedule for 1977-78 A teacher schedule for 1977-78 school year was approved by the Garfield County School Board which will eliminate five teachers In the district and five other teachers will divide their time between two schools each. The art teacher is a traveling teacher throughout the district. This plan also provides drama for students not Interested in the sports programs. There is no band teacher scheduled for next year at the present time but Supt. Kerry Nelson is working on fundings for this program. "I have to keep in mind the students and programs first then consider the feelings of the teachers," Mr. Nelson said. He feels the plan they came up with emphasizes this direction. This plan includes input from the district, school board, Garfield Education Association, teachers, Parent' Teacher Association and concerned citizens. One problem leading to the schedule being made now for the 1977-78 school year is the law stating the teachers need to know three months before the end of the school year, what teaching opportunities are being offered them. The district is facing a projected 62 student reduction from 877 students this year to 817 next year. It is also facing a reduction of $113,925 as a result of this student decrease and the closing down of the Panguitch Middle School, which has been declared asn an unnecessary existing small school by the State Board of Education. Another problem the district has to face is even though there will only be 817 students, five buildings must be maintained because there are about 2600 square miles in the populated area of the district from Boulder to Panguitch. When making the plan, the superintendent said he had to consider the student-teacher ratio, keeping It low enough to create a good learning situation and yet not too small, because of the financial situation. Nelson pointed out that the first three years of the student's learning experience is the most important years. "If a student learns the basics during these years he will be a good student the rest of his school years," he pointed out. "For this reason it is very important to have good teacher-student ratio and it is also very important to have good teachers." "I feel this is a good plan and rather it works or not is going to depend upon every one's attitude." Nelson said. Geo. Jolley. curriculum director for the district said he believes if the teachers and principals will sit down together they can come up with creative ways in scheduling resulting in better programs for the students. Many of the teachers objected to the travel involved, stating they would be too tired to do a good teaching job. The Garfield Education Association called a special 10 minute meeting between the teachers then asked that the program not be adopted at this time. LaMar Feltner, school board chairman said they had been elected to make decisions in the education programs In the district and Mr. Nelson had been hired to be administrator. He said they had studied the program very hard and felt good about the plan and therefore they adopted it.
