Show Escalante Fire Track Arrival Provides Early Christmas Gift ESCALANTE - Fulfilling a lifelong dream, the fire truck has finally arrived in Escalante providing the people of the area with the fire protection they have worked so hard to get. They project of obtaining the truck and building a place to Iwep the fire truck and ambulance was started many years ago with the actual hard work beginning early last year under the direction of Theron Mitchell, the president of the f club. The $12,000, 500 gallon truck was purchased from L.A. Curtis, In Salt Lake City. It came fully equipped, ready to be used In case of a fire. Some of the Items included with the truck were 1,000 feet of new two and on-half Inch hose, to be used in case of a large fire or as a draft hose from the fire hydrant. The hose will pump 340 gallons of water per minute. Forest Included and a live reel with 500 feet Inch hose, used for a regular fire. Church Burkemeyer has been chairman in charge of obtaining the fire engine and Arlis Brooks has been in charge of the fire house. The city councllmen said plans were being made to update their water system which now consists of six inch lines out of the head house reducing all the way down to one and one- Service provided halt the needed $12,000, with the remainder received from contributions half Inches. MOst of the lines are about two Inches. There is a fire hydrant about every two blocks. The new system will have 12 Inch line from the head house, ten Inch line from there to each school house. An eight inch service line will be outside the town with six Inch lines to each house. There should be a fire hydrant on each block. The Forest Service paid $6,000 on the truck with the remaining $6,000 coming from donations within the city. All the money except $200 has been collected, according to Mr. Mitchell. A resident of Escalante, G rover Reeder is a retired professional fireman and has been named as a training specialist to the volunteeer firemen. The fire truck-ambulance building will be completed shortly' as the doors arrived-Tuesday. The building and fire truck has become a reality because of the generosity of the Escalante people in donating their labor and money, Mr. Mitchell said. Until the building is complete the fire truck and ambulance has been kept In Theron's service station at night and removed during the day to make room at his place of business. |
