Show BLM Deplores Wilderness Grab Acclaims Road To Bullfrog Escalante Cattlemen and Chamber of Commerce members, worried in recent months by efforts of certain conservation groups to get their range lands classified ss Wilderness were relieved Fridsy to hear Fred Howard, manager of their Bureau of Land Management district say that the territory in question was suitable only for multiple use concept of public land use. Mr. Howard stated that the district B LM. office has submitted to the Washington headquarters a plan for such classification of the Escalante River drainage area. This comprises approximately one million acres mainly In the Circle Cliffs, the Escalante Desert and the Escalante River Canyons. A limited area southeast of Silver Falls and including the Flower Canyons of the river basin is proposed by the BLM to be designated a "Primitive Area" because of special scenic attractions It holds. A portion of two Boulder grazing allotments are within its boundaries. Grazing would be continued on these allotments as would oil development and all uses except mining. Recreation areas would be created in some of the canyons and many scenic trails built, according to BLM plans |
