Show Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVEY Typical April weather, looks warm but that breeze gives one a chill. Still some of the youngsters are running around in abbreviated togs. The stockmen are still finding cattle too weak to get out of the mud without help. The town's oldest citizen, Joanna Barker fell on her kitchen floor and they fear her hip Is broken. Dee and Elda Haws got ready to take her to Salt Lake when she went into shock, so the doctor said to keep her quiet. Her two sons Elvln and Dee, Elvin's sou Lynn and her daughter Elsie Fitts came from Salt Lake and stayed overnight, then got the Page Flying Service to take Mrs. Barker to Salt Lake for hospitalization. Ray and Lenora Griffin are having quite a struggle, her knees have swollen until she cannot get around alone and he Is not able yet to help her so their kids have to give them a hand. Gail Bailey Is recovering from summer pneumonia and It Is not yet summer. He and Donna went down the desert and It was so much hotter than here he caught the ailment. Phyllis Alvey took daughter Dawnle back to Salt Lake for more surgery and had to leave her. Thurman Spencer had a freak accident Saturday; he was hauling two horses In his truck enroute to the desert when a ty-od broke turning the truck loose. It tipped over throwing one horse out and correlllng the other underneath. Fred was with Thurman and they were unhurt. Some other cattlemen came along to help get the truck onto its wheels then Lynn Gates towed it In. Dick Miller flew his small son to Page to have his chin sewed up, he got kicked by a Shetland Missed some Easter trips last week; Reeves and Laura Baker went north where he attended conference meetings and she stayed with their daughter Laurel and family. El-wood and Vaunda Willis and family came from Richfield and Joined Ivan and Nelda for a trip to Montlcello to visit Lynn and Garna Mclnelly. There were still snow banks there on the north sides. El-wood and Vaunda brought their youngest child Lisa and left her with the grandparents while they went to Las Vegas where El wood would represent the Sevier Valley School District at a National convention for elementary school principals. Hal Shurts has been filling out applications forms for several years to get to go to the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado to take a tour of the school and find out the program for boys. His persistans was at last rewarded as he spent last week there learning the many opportunities offered our young people. He was Impressed very favorably with the academy and would be glad to explain its advantages to anyone Interested. John and Lola Zenz got word of the arrival of their fourth great-grandchild, a girl born to Steven and Larie Zenz of Reno, Nevada. He Is a senior at the State University of Nevada. Paul and Mary Steed made a trip to Spokane, Washington their oldest boy said they were tending themselves. Long looked for came at last: the county DUP officers visited our camp last Thursday and we hope thoy enjoyed the visit as mu "i as we enjoyed having them. They viewed our relics and Afton was particularly interested as some things were there which belonged to her mother, Aunt Susan Heaps. Rex and Eva Allen of River-ton were here, they have bought the old Mclnelly family home. Lester Mclnelly and part of his family were here gathering up their belongings. Lon Heaps came from Salt Lake bringing his sister Dems snd wife Evelyn. Dema stayed st the Starns Mechanu snd Lon snd wife st the Robert Ustons. The Edson Alveys hsd Dee Whittaker, Arvonne and the little girl here from Cedar City where he is attending school, and Iona's mother Rose Peterson of Salt Lake City. Iris Porter went to Sslt Lake snd plans to bring her sister I-orla home for awhile. Ron Schow called her and asked her to wait a day or so and bring his son Lynn home, be is returning from a foreign mission. Kate Porter, Shlrlee Spencer, Betty and Kristle Al-vey and Thais Griffin had business In Richfield. Those we hoard of going to Cedar City were Judy Kelly, Coleen Burrows, Geraldlne Liaton, Ronald and LaRue Spencer. Andrew Spencer is home from California, his daughter Geneal brought him to see If he can stand It here. Lorin and Meletta Cottam and daughter Etna Creek were here cleaning the yards, etc. BUlie Bsrker came from St. George to visit a spell Boyd Griffin waa home for the weekend. Dale Wilson wss here flying high wide and tverywhlchwsy He has selected Festos as his co-pilot Earl Woolaey has his daughter Earlene Nelson of Green River here catching up on some genealogy. Kay and Jin Cartas had business in Salt Lake. Laretta Shurtz went to Granger with Hal and visited son Gordon, his wife and four kids, then she and VsJeree came home with him. While Wallace Roundy and Betty Alvey were in Salt Lake they had quite a family reunion; Jerry waa there from Hawaii, he Is a Bishop and came for conference. He stopped in Seattle, Wash, and visited Edna Smith awd family. Floyd and wife came from Myton and Linda Alvey from Logan to Salt Lake, Glade and Vivian live there so they had a good visit. Delia Christiansen came from Las Vegas for the weekend. Reed snd Wilmirth Wooley and granddaughter Julie Jensen went to Albuquerque for Easter then the Wooleys went to Salt Lake to see son Ronnie, who had been injured when a barrel rolled on him. Ardis and Norman Christensen had a visit from s niece. Fern snd family and Jo came from Provo Boyd Alvey had a break so took his mother, fla to Salt Lake to see that new baby girl born to Arts Beth and Danny Pollock, of course they picked up Opal Talbot in Panguitch. Many horses and people went to St. George for the races, those we saw returning had their shirts but were not brag ging about wlnnlnga Holbert and Bonnie Smith and the Al Fosters visited at the BUlie Davis home. Vernon and Mar-gene Stowe had business In Salt Lake City Nell Barker went to St. George to visit the Paul ' anions snd Gayla called that they had put her In the hospital, yes she wss sick. Conference wss held in the North ward church with the usual High council and Leadership meetings Saturday eve ning, followed by the Stake Gold and Green Ball. The music was furnished by the Grif- ' fin orchestra and there was an outstanding floor show. The General meeting was held Sun-dsy morning with Invocation by Hal Shurtz; the Stake Presidency Chase Shurtz, Reeves Baker and Malen Mecham, and the visiting brethern John Longdon were the speakers then Bro. Longdon sang accompanied by Dawn Griffin. The Singing Mothers sang two numbers, and Leslie LeFevre gave the benediction. In Sacrament meeting the North ward program waa put on by the Bryce Valley Seminary under the direction of Bro. Pead. four boys and four girls took part. The South ward speakers were Thoriey Johnson, Clele Fletcher and Elmo Bushnell. Mary Ellen Coleman has s new grandson born to Vsleree and Tobe Da vies in Salt Lake. Mary Ellen went up and stayed awhile but the little feller did not arrive so she csme home and sent the other grandmother. Dale Marsh, Bob Sor-ensen and Mohr Christensen went to Kanab for the Five County meeting. Jaleen Pollock went to Cedar City to see about getting back In Beauty school. Lorell Munson took a car load of young people to Tropic for Youth Night. Coach Evan Excell took the High School j boys to Valley for a track j meet The Chamber of Commerce, the stockmen, and officials from the BLM and the Forest Service held a meeting to discuss land grab problems. Erma Woolsey Grade and a gentleman friend from Lehi were here visiting old friends and hunting relatives with some extra beda and food. We learn a lot In this old world in various degrees and amounts, but what we learn after knowing It all is the knowledge that really counts |
