While for five days tho veterans had been granted tho freedom of tho city, nnd had been feted and enter-talnd enter-talnd In true western stylo during overy momont that thoy were not engaged en-gaged In tho conduct of the business of tho organization, at tho convention hall in tho Tabernacle, a great number num-ber of tho visitors wero bo well pleased with tho reception given them by the people of Utah as a whole that they will remain, in Utnh sovoral days, making side trips from Salt Lake City, and visiting points of Interest they wore unnblo to Beo during dur-ing the tlmo allotted for the business sessions. There was a warm fight between St. Louis nnd Atlantic City, N. J., for tho prlvllego of entertaining tho veterans at tho next annual convention, Atlantic At-lantic City finally winning tho coveted honor. For commander-in-chief, Samuel II. Van Sant, of Minneapolis, was chosen, and will direct tho affairs of the Grand Army of tho Ropubllc for the next twelve months. The now commander-in-chief was formerly governor of tho state or Minnesota. J. W. Bostaph, of Ogden, was chosen senior vlco commander. Tho other officers selected wero: Junior vlce-comnmndor, Alfred B. Beers of Connecticut; surgeon general, gen-eral, Dr. W. II. Lemon or Kansas; for chaplain, Rev. Danlol Ryan of Indianapolis In-dianapolis was chosen. Resolutions wore ndopted by tho Grand Army of tho Republic and auxiliary aux-iliary branches, before adjournment of tho convention, giving lavish praise to Utnh and Salt Lake City for tho manner in which tho visitors had been entertained. While tho veterans were holding their convention, the wives, sisters nnd daughters of tho Union soldlors wero holding conventions of tholr organizations, or-ganizations, tho Woman's Relief Corps, the Ladles of tho Grand Army of tho Republic, and the Daughters ol Votorans. These three organizations hold their conventions on Thursday and Friday, tho sessions being held In tho First Presbyterian church, the First Congregational church, and tho Eagle's hall.
