Yesterday being Arbor Day, the children of the district schools had a gala time marching, jroinft through various exercises and finishing the day I by renting trees around the school grounds. About half-past nine the , Enterprise"' Band marched up Centre I street -playing a good lively march. Under the leadership of Prof. Giles t ihe children sang, "Decorate the 1 school-ground." The proceeumgs were cut short by a request from Judx HU.cklurD, as the enthusiasm disturbed the case that i wai then before the court. The children marched from the Curt house to their respect! re districts, :; where, after a few exercises, the day was finished with tree planting. I At the Central school house, the ex- I ercises were opened with singing from I the choir and a congratulatory FpeecHj f . from Supt. E. A. Wiiin, followed tfy I ' a speech from Prof. UrimhuU in which he displayed a beautiful picture, repre- I sentine, as Prof. Brimhall justly re- marked, "one of the bast pems that I was ever written," ''Gray's Elegy in a I coantry churchyard." The picture is j the work of Mrs. Jane Bee Jones and I was presented by her to the Central I school, and received bj them yesterday J with a vote of thanks, j After singing by the choir, the stu- I dents Biarched out to the school I grounds and tree planting was began. :i Among the trees planted were some to the memory of Socrates, Shakespeare, Shakes-peare, Tennyson, Emma Abbot, and i La Fayette. There were forty-four trees planted in all. At the West school, the children planted sixty trees. Around each tree the little children sang a patriotic song, accompanied by a speech from the boy or girl planting the tree. Amonf the numerous trees planted here to the memory of heroes and heroines of history we mention, George Washington, for whom a I cherry tree was planted, Cilumbus. Queen Isabella of Spain, Queen Victoria, Vic-toria, Pestalozzl, the leading teacher I of modern education, ! At the F:rst ward similar exercises were irone through. Prof. Eawlirtrs and Mis B Winers conducting and di-refneth di-refneth children in their various exercises. On the whole Arbor Day was celebrated cele-brated in a thoroughly becoming man- ner, and as one of the teachers re- 1 marked: "These days of exhibition j and amusement prove t be a very im- I portant factor in the education of the I children. It is to be regretted, hnw- I ever, that there was not more of the I parents of the children present to 1 watch the exercises, as it would have I proven to them that the children wre I in the proper hands for a geod educa- I tion." j The procession was fully a half I mile in length, there bHng nearly 600 1 children in line, carrying the colors of I the schools, which bad been adopted. I viz: red and white. Each child held I a rod. with the colors wor.ad around 1 it, while others wore badge:-, with the initials "P. F. S.," Provo Free Schools. Two banners were displayed by the j Central scholars, with the mottoes: I ' He who plants a tree plants Hope," I and "She who plants a tree plants I Love." I The children enjoyed the day im I mensely and the teachers were repaid I for their labors by seeing the children 1 happy. |
