Show A BEAUTIFUL LIFE. : Yesterday tbe people of Trovo laid away in the grave with tender regret and touching ceremonies the last remains re-mains of a lady whose life tad been spent in unselfish services to the people. peo-ple. She came from a distant land her hands bearing good gifts to the people of Utah. A pure minded, noble woman; wo-man; noble as wife, as mother and as friend, her special mission was to the young and innocent. These she leved with deathless devotion and scattered all over this lovely county are found young men and maidens who will never cease calling blessings upon the memory of Mrs, Anna K. Smoot. A gen-tie gen-tie touch here, a softly breathed word there, a timely admonition to this one, a loving repro of to that. These were her weapons of warfare and what a glorious victory she won with her gentle weapons, let yesterday's general sorrow sor-row and the great concourse at the Tabernacle attest. There was healing in her touch, in her gentle voice, in the soft glance of her eye. "Well done thou good and faithful" was the plaudit she received from the Master. It is over with her but her glorious example ex-ample remains to us here. Shall we use it? Shall we be grateful for it? Shall we profit by it? Suppose every woman in Utah county lived the true, unselfish and blameless life this good woman has lived, how long think you it would be until ignorance, ignor-ance, lice, drunkenees, coarseness, vulgarity and selfishness would be banished from the community? It was easy for Anna K. Smoot to live thiB life. May it not be just as easy for others? Suppose there were an hun- dred such women at wort in Utah county how long would it be until its moral excellence, its general intelligence, intelli-gence, its virtuous maidens and manly men would attract attention from all parts of the territory? Aye, aye, from the entire west? We would then here have the initial point of departure for the general millenium. What power has this beautiful life exerted in this narrow sphere? How long will its gentle memory remain to make womankind purer and mankind nobler, gentler and more tolerant? In cases of this kind we get glimpses of what the world could be made, were all woman pure, gentle and unselfish and men all noble, honest and earnest in doing good instead of evil. We are among those who believe this example is too valuable to be neglected. W would see it driven home to men and women everywhere, of every faith and in all walks of life. We meet them but once in life and what these solitary , glimpses reveal makes the desire for more, more and more intense. It is a good thing for Provo and Utah county that this good lady lived, that her home and sphere of labor were located here, that her death occurred here bo that ier life's splendid example may be driven, completed and perfect as it is, deep into the minds and memories of the people among whom she worked and whom she loyed with a deathless affection. |
