Grunnls Voted 4n English Woman' Wo-man' Opinion of Us-j .litis Emerson'i Appointment Gave letter Than She Got Miss Means 'Wins ller Case. A gentleman, whose opinions on many subjects the world has thought worth preserving, has said the , with small variations, va-riations, men and wom:n are interested in the same subjects. Lrd Chesterfield, who never made sweet ing statements, j and whose knowledge of women no ona i will dispute, is in this belief entitled to respectful consideration. At this moment mo-ment from Boston comes the news that the young women there for some time have had a widely connected organization organiza-tion of protective tariff clubs. These were formed two years ago under the inspiration of Governor McKinley's speeches. It seems that whenever the governor spoko there was always conspicuous in the audience a young- woman with a notebook. Alter the spench was ended I she was sure to present herself with a j query in the group that always collects j to shake hands with the speaker. There ' was an earnestness in her demeanor and j a serious light in her eye that could only come from deep conviction and a high j purpose. Thi3 forbade the thought of a j woman reporter. These various young j women were, in fact, the representatives of the different young women's protective protect-ive clubs, now a flourishing affiliated organization. The enterprise is not at ail a new one. In this city a group of working girls has for six years had a club devoted to economic eco-nomic subjects. This einb, however, is not committed to any selfish, one sided view of these questions, bnt to the study of the underlying principles. Their opinions opin-ions vary as their minds incline. One girl is a protectionist, another a free trader. It is especially interesting to see how aptly they are . m illustrate and illuminate their view i tl)ix-c-w.i experiences as work-. fcnen. One of theso girls is a shirtmaer. a discussion between this girl and some picked Boston Bos-ton classic from the protect clubs would be as interesting an event ts the prize debates between Harvard and Yale. There ia one thing to be said for the Boston Bos-ton clubs they would not wholly 'destroy 'de-stroy the exciting sport of eluding thu customs. New York Sun, |
