Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork B14 • WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2008 Lady Skyhawks Covering what matters most Bears best Salem in seesaw battle Shaun Peterson STAFF WRITER On Thursday, Dec. 18 the Salem Hills Skyhawks played host to the number one ranked Bear River Bears. It was a hard fought game but in the end Bear River came away with this one 61-54 giving Salem its first home loss of the season. The Skyhawks played a 3-2 defense game and early on created lots of confusion for the Bears. Multiple steals lead to some easy baskets and a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter for Salem. The Bears caught on in the second as they knocked down some shots from the perimeter and took their first lead of the game going 17-16 midway through the second quarter. Skyhawks guard Dustin Belliston showed great hustle diving for a loose ball and dishing it to Kyle Shuler who put it in giving Salem the lead by one. The slim lead didn't hold up long as Bear River went into the break with a 26-24 lead. It was the same story in the second half with lead changes and momentum swings. The Skyhawks held the Bears to a slim lead throughout the third until they got it going from outside. With the game tied 36-36 sophomore London Simonson rattled in a threepointer and got the foul for two more putting Salem up four going into the fourth. The Skyhawks kept shooting outside as Dustin Belliston hit one to give Salem its biggest lead of the game 43-36. The Bears battled back and went on a 10-3 run to tie the game up at 46. Salem Hills bench made a good showing with some shots on the night but the highlight came when Skinner hit a three and put Salem up again by three late in the fourth. Once again the numberone-ranked Bears came back with a big run late in the fourth going up 56-50. The Skyhawks fought hard, cutting the lead to three, but in the end Bear River was just too much. "We were plagued by turnovers all night, " said Coach DeGraffenried. "The turnovers killed us." Both Riley Hanks and London Simonson led the Skyhawks with 12 points apiece. Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News ROAD WARRIORS: The Lady Skyhawks traveled to Waterford Thursday, Dec. 18 and came away with a 28-22 victory. Rachel Simmons led all scorers with 14, including one trey. Lyssa Hanks, above, had four points. SF wrestling: From GRAPPLERS • B l lead with another to go up 5-3. Andreasen had one last shot to send it to overtime and was ever-so-close but time ran out just as he was about to score a reversal. It was another heartbreaking loss. Both Trevyn Gardner (119 lbs) and Matt Anderson (125 lbs) won by forfeit to give SF an automatic 10 points and a 37-12 lead. Kaleb Ashworth (130 lbs) is undefeated and is a scoring machine. He scored con- secutive takedowns before cranking his opponent's arm twice for back points which gave him a 15-2 advantage in round three. His opponent showed good strength as he endured 30 seconds on his back to end the match but it was another major decision for the junior. Nolan Haycock (135 lbs) wrestled a similar style of match. He scored takedowns with relative ease and earned back points twice in the bout for an easy 11-2 victory. At 140 lbs, Taylor Edwards found himself down 4-2 but used a bar arm in round two for back points for the lead change. But the AF wrestler scored two takedowns to cam a 10-8 decision in a hard fought match. Tom Clark (145 lbs) scored two quick takedowns to go up 4-1 to end round one. Then the slick senior nailed an escape before hitting another takedown for a 7-1 advantage. At the end of round two, Clark scored an impressive takedown just inside the circle to take a commanding lead. He then cruised to an easy 12-4 win which gave the Dons their final margin of victory. Dons vs. Devils: From DONS • B l in the second that led to an 11-2 run by their opponent. There weren't too many highlights in this eight minute stretch but Breck Lewis looked to spark the Dons with a lot of hustle and hard play which is the norm for him. He answered with a lay-up around some big boys and moments later, Travis Still swiped the ball and outraced everyone down-court for another score. Williamsen hit a big three-pointer with 15 seconds to go before the break but Springville's Delgado countered with a long-ball of his own. Spanish Fork was unable to hold onto the ball during the quarter and their inability to crash the boards also seemed to plague them. Springville went on a 25-9 scoring surge in the quarter to go up 41-22 at intermission. The Dons struggled to contain their opponent in the third as well. On one play, a Red Devil picked another SF player's pocket and raced down-court for a breakaway jam which fired up the other team's crowd. Throughout the night, Springville made it to the charity stripe often and converted 19/28 (68 percent) free-throws while SF struggled in that department. Spanish shot a measly 5/16 (31 percent) but had 12 fewer chances on the night than their opponent. "We missed a lot of freethrows tonight," said Coach Bailey. "But normally we don't do that and that will improve." 1 In the final quarter, the Dons worked hard to finish strong. Junior Gavin Hales began lighting it up from downtown and finished with three treys on the night (all in second half) but too much damage was done in the previous two quarters of play. Four players for Springville finished in double figures. For the Dons, Lewis led the way with 12. Hales pitched in II and Williamsen had 10. "We played good in the first and fourth quarter," said Coach Bailey. "But in the second and third we didn't. We turned the ball over too many times and we've got to do a better job of boxing out and putting a body on a man. There were some good times and good things we did but we have a lotto work on." ^&V Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News TOP HAWK: London Simonson had 12 points against Bear River. |
