SHHS Close-Up club visits Washington D.C. On Saturday Nov. 1, eight students and one teacher from Salem Hills' High headed to Washington D.C. Elisa Lewis, Brenda Findley, Alexis Marble, Stacey Tuckett, Camerie George, Bailey Palfreyman, Tiffany Burch, and Phillip Lundell led by Jim Griffin visited a number exciting sites and even paiticipated in a mock; election in honor of the real election. This first ever Close-Up trip from Salem Hills High brought lessons of the government, the people's role and unforgettable sights. One of these was the Holocaust Museum, one of the first sites viewed on Saturday. After receiving information on a real person who experienced the holocaust, they traveled down four floors, reading more about their person each floor. The photos, video and even real clothing worn by the Jews brought reverence and shock to everyone who walked through. But if that wasn't enough, they ventured on to see Arlington Cemetery and its famous changing of the guard. People travel from all over the world just to see this amazing event. Not only did they witness this event but they toured Robert E. Lee's Mansion, where the famous general lived. But it actually turned out it wasn't really his home. The owner was actually a big fan of George Washington and collected anything associated with him. The owner allowed Lee to live there during the Civil War. When Sunday dawned, they met with other students all from all across the country. These students accompanied them on the tours of the many sights in D.C. and lessons about government and even a mock election. Some of the sights included the Lincoln Monument, Iowa Jima, Navy, Air Force, Vietnam and Korean Monuments. These sights demonstrated the amazing architecture used to create^them. But Mr. Griffin proved he had more to offer the eager students. They got to meet Mike Levitt, former Governor of Utah and Secretary of Health in the President Bush's Cabinet. They were able to tour the control center where Phillip showed them his leadership skills at the podium. They also got a picture with Levitt himself. If that wasn't enough, they were given a tour of the capital and even an underground museum not yet viewed by the public. Though the tours and sights were amazing, meeting fellow students from across the country was really cool. They met knew friends and learned about the diverse but unifying culture of this country. Though the eventful week came to a close, the journey is not over. We at Salem Hills hope that this chance of a lifetime tradition gains strength and continues through future generations. This event is a life altering experience, whether you're interested in politics or not. We encourage students to come join the Close-Up club and the community to help support those students, and fuel this incredible trip.
