And just like football, Spanish came out on top again with an impressive 52-15 win. Hadley Thorpe (152 lbs) got things started off for the red and gray. In Thorpe's match, there were four lead changes but the savvy senior rolled his opponent for back points to earn a 9-6 victory. Mike Stone (160 lbs) endured a battle with his opponent. In fact, this was the most entertaining match of the night as lead changes occurred early and often. Tied at 13 all, and with six seconds to go, the AF wrestler found an opening and scored a takedown to come out on top. Stone lost a heartbreaker but showed a lot of heart in his efforts. The first two matches set the tone for SF and the others went to work. Dan Gillie (171 lbs) was scored on first but nailed a reversal before rolling his opponent for back points with a bar arm. The stocky senior again earned back points by putting his man into the cradle position where he stayed for a pin at the end Chad Carter, www.cartsphoto.com / Spanish Fork News of round one. The Mighty Dons were back in action Tuesday Dec. 16, 2008 against the Springville Red Devils in non-region action in the Don Dome. Spanish Fork played a solid two quarters in the contest, but it wasn't enough to take care of the blue and red. In the second and third frames, Springville outscored the Dons 47-21 and got it done by forcing turnovers as well as converting high percentage shots. SF played solid in the first and final quarters but struggled to put it all together for a full 32 minutes of play and fell by the score of 80-56. Spanish took a timeout at the six-minute mark after trailing 10-2. Bailey challenged his squad and they responded with a 9-2 run to get within three (14-11) which forced a Red Devil timeout. Ren Williamsen entered the game and looked to have something to prove to his former team. The junior wing man penetrated the lane and made a beautiful spin move around tiis defender before laying it off the glass for a deuce. B ut Springville nailed a trey to extend their lead to 19-13 at the end of the first. The Red and Gray were called for a technical foul The determined Dons traveled to Provo to outlast the bulldogs in an emotional and injury marred contest. Coaches, parents and players breathed a sigh of relief when the final horn sounded and the Lady Dons defeated the Bulldogs 55-46. The Don defense was stifling in the first quarter as Jessie Anderson denied Provo's leading scorer Kuchar from touching the ball. SF was dominating until Anderson was landed on, and crumpled to the floor after chasing a rebound with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Time stood still until Anderson was wheeled off the floor by paramedics. The Bulldogs also lost a valuable player to a knee injury with one minute remaining. The Lady Dons led 12-5 ending the first quarter. Provo outscored SF 13-12 in the second quarter. The teams traded baskets and the officiating allowed no momentum for either team. Shea Johnson stepped up and defended Kuchar extremely well. The Dons survived the half with a 24-18 lead. The third quarter was marred by foul trouble and missed baskets.
