Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork Covering ivhat matters most WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2008 • B7 Griffen goes to Washington Lana Hiskey NEBO DISTRICT Shauna Griffen, a German and history teacher at Spanish Pork High School, was chosen for the 2008 Washington, D.C. Museum Teacher Fellowship Program. Each year, the program selects up to 15 educators in grades 7-12 to be designated as Museum Teacher Fellows. These educators must show evidence of extensive knowledge of Holocaust history, successful teaching experience and participation in community and professional organizations. Griffen participated in a five-day, all-expense-paid institute this past summer at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, in Washington, D.C. This institute immersed Griffen in advanced historical and pedagogical issues. Following the summer institute, Museum Teacher Fellows, such as Griffen, are expected to create and implement an outreach project in their schools, communities or professional organizations. In July of next year, Griffen will attend a followup program at the Museum to assess her various efforts, and to continue her study of the Holocaust with Museum staff and noted speakers. "I would like to increase Holocaust awareness and education among my own students, as well as the teachers I work with in social studies and world languages. And, after watching my niece [who has diabetes] and seeing her struggles with it,.five dollars is definitely worth giving in order to help." Shauna Griffen in is a year-long program that will hopefully extend on within the communities where we teach," said Griffen. "1 would like to help raise a greater awareness of the genocides that are occurring in the world today and encourage my students and the community to be engaged at levels perhaps not previously realized in the effort to stop these genocides and prevent future genocides." Griffen has wanted to be a history teacher since she was in grade school, and has collected Civil War memorabilia since she was a child. Griffen wants to incorporate Holocaust studies into her German classes. She is now .better equipped to teach her students about the Holocaust, since she has heard about this great tragedy directly from Holocaust survivors and authors. "It's a pretty overwhelming opportunity, but one filled with exciting and enriching possibilities," said Griffen. \ ^ % 'eian ^yaum ~(Qtfate6 ftoufoto-Schoxyi/SPECIALS / -\ ; Luxurious Townhomes in Salem starting at $184,900 Choose from many options: cranial saarhl • Fully landscaped • Stucco and stone exterior • Solid surface countertops and surrounds • Jetted tubs in master bath • Attached garages • Raised panel cabinets • Several floor plans cM^;<^:;:| Botiy ,Pedicure*$25 to-$49 (MatteredToot*te>not :T w- beach s«iA,d &au.\*,h. ±o % off all treatmei>ut£ v3» piA,£pecXfll), tefl room, mtn'W., dv^d houki Model now open!
