They spent the day delivering blankets they had made to the Family Support Center. The blankets will be used by children ages 12 to infant. They also held a food drive the week before and took the food to the Food Bank. The students had a fun cray serving others. Canyon wins chess tournament The Ncbo School District Elementary Chess Tournament was held Saturday, March 1, 2008. Following are the results in each category. Team Standings are First place Capyon (67.5), second place Art City (66.5), third place Mapleton (61.0), fourth place Hobble Creek (41.0), fifth place Sage Creek (23.0) and sixth place Taylor (20.5). On the kindergarten level first place went to Jake Bolen (5.0) Canyon, second place Monte Taylor (5.0) Art City, third place Dylan Wright (4.0) Sage Creek, fourth place Spencer Winward (3.5) Hobble Creek, fifth place Timothy Barton (3.0) Hobble Creek, and sixth place Samuel Davenport (2.0) Taylor. On the first grade level first place went to Eliza Lindstrom (6.0)TayIor, second place Brandon Schellenburg (5.0) Maplelon, third place Elliot Layton (3.5) Mapleton, fourth place Wade Bastian (3.5) Mapleton, fifth place Joshua Leon (3.5) Taylor, and sixth place Makenzi Jensen (3.5) Hobble Creek. On the second grade level, first place went to Mason Lindstfom (6.0)Taylor, second place to Jaxon Olsen (5.0) Canyon, third place to Cooper Murray (4.0) Art City, fourth place to Jacob Scutt (3.5) Mapleton, fifth place to Joshua Eaton (3.5) Sage Creek and sixth place to Sarah Stratton (3.5) Mapleton. On the third grade level, first place went to Wesley Bastian (6.0)Mapleton, second place to Jeffrey Taylor (5.0) Art City, third place to James Cheshire (4.5) Canyon, fourth place to Justin Blake (4.5) Canyon, fifth place to Max Riche (4.0) Art City, and sixth place to Spencer Nelson (4.0) Mapleton. On the fourth grade level, first place went to Colby Gillies (3.0)Mapleton, second place to Ethan Burnham (5.0)Spanish Oaks, third place to Jacob Warnock (4.5) Canyon, fourth place to Nathan Winward (4.0) Hobble Creek, fifth place to Porter Graham' (4,0) Canyon, and sixth place to Baily Smith (4.0) Canyon. On the fifth grade level, first place went to Billy Schaefermeyer (6.0) Canyon, second to Brandon Baum (4.5)Canyon, third place to Enoch Groberg (4.5)Wilson, fourth place to Tyrel Belone (4.0)Wilson, fifth place to Scott Griffin (4.0) Mapleton, and sixth place to Rebecca Elzinga (4.0) Art City. And finally the sixth grade winners were, first place, Collin Pope (5.5) Art City, second, Tyler Smith (5.0) Canyon, third Spencer Tuft (4.0)Sage Creek, fourth Tanner Michelsen (4.0) Riverview, fifth Jared Jackson (3.5)Spanish Oaks and sixth Nicole Zamora-Wilson (2.5) Art City. Congratulations to the winners. Canyon SCHOOL BREAKFAST WEEK: To kick off National School Breakfast Week, Canyon Elementary had a school wide poster contest. The theme was "Fuel Your Imagination". Students' posters were displayed in the school cafeteria. The winning poster was by fifth grade student Alyssa Woodberry. Several other students got "honorable mention" for their posters. Not pictured, Nate Averett and Katie Taylor. Courtesy photo KINOY 500: The annual Kindy 500 at Foothills Elementary was attended and enjoyed by the kindergarten classes. Each child with help from parents built a car and traveled to see and learn about our great American symbols. They visited the Statue of Liberty, the White House with Mrs. Bush, Lincoln Memorial, Mt. Rushmore, the Liberty Bell, and visited with Betsy Ross. They were able to come away with a greater knowledge of the symbols and to have a souvenir. With a 4.0 GPA, Vallan's favorite classes include ^photography and multi-media. He pruns cross country and is a mid7. fielder on the SFHS soccer team. 2 Vallan is also the math Sterling £ Scholar. NATURAL HISTORY: On Feb. 2 1 , 2008 the Utah Museum of Natural History visited Canyon Elementary forth graders through their Museum on the Move outreach program. Two scientists from the museum spent 90 minutes with each of Canyon's five forth grade classrooms teaching, sharing and exploring Utah animals, their adaptations and classifications. DEAN-S BIG BIRD: On Feb. 19, 2008 Canyon Elementary hosted a Birds of Prey assembly provided by the Hutchings Museum located in Lehi. The assembly which included the whole school, taught about adaptations and differences of different birds of prey such as the falcon, hawk, eagle and owl. Students were especially thrilled by the five live examples that bird handler Ben Woodruff brought to show to the students.
