The beset, beleaguered, and belated city center project is roaring back for a likely fall debut. This is especially welcome news for the many people who have contributed blood, sweat, and tears in the three-year effort to convert the fire station garage on Woodland Hills Dr. into a multi-purpose building. In a few weeks, when the last details are decided and documented, they should see rapid progress. Two meeting rooms in the building will solve the city's ongoing problem of having no fixed location for city council meetings. One meeting room will accommodate nearly 50 people, sufficient for most meetings, and a second room is nearly twice as large. Offices for the mayor, fire chief, city recorder, finance director, engineer and public works superintendent are already framed and waiting for final approval before sheetrock instaliation. All the city records will be housed in a vault in the basement, instead of being scattered in homes throughout the city. The fire department is looking forward to tfie completion of the interior of the lower floor in which the city's fire and emergency trucks and gear are stored. Councilman Bob Fisher has been working with Jack Marshall to complete the plans. Fisher believes in "measure twice, saw once" and he will try to ensure, through careful planning, that there are no surprises between now and completion. Pending items are a review of compliance with accessibility requirements, a review of fire code compliance, and preparation of "as built to" engineering drawings that will document the all the construction details. Fisher and Marshall are also gathering all the" requirements of city officials and employees who will be using the building in order to make sure that they carry out their activities effectively. Once that process wraps up, consultant Robert Nelson, who has been advising the city on the project for several months,, will help the city find contractors for finishing the building. Everyone agrees that the project is straightforward if the contractors are available. In the meantime, the final work to complete the wiring and plumbing is ongoing in preparation for a 4-way inspection (electrical, mechanical, heating, and ventilation). In 2005 the city started the project using volunteer labor. Resident Burt Cherry was the project manager, and under his direction thousands of hours of volunteer time resulted in the structure that standstoday.Thateffortended at the beginning of 2007, and the project has largely languished since then. Some electrical work continued, and Nelson prepared GANT charts to guide schedule planning. Early this year the city council approved a acquiring a loan of $370K for completing the facility. Fisher intends to stay within that budget by carefully prioritizing needs as he reviews the requirements that he gets from the city officials and employees. The landscaping and parking lot construction are being done separately. Council member Jerry Johnson is handling landscaping plans. The homeowner's association, WHPOA, will provide funds for some or all of the interior furnishings, landscaping, and parking lot paving. Nelson commends the city on the community spirit and energy that has gone into the project and says that he looking forward to working with the city during the coming months. Kiwanis sponsors R.I.F. Following a delicious roast beef dinner, served on tables decorated with Easter Candies, our president introduced Donna Measom for our program. Donna reviewed a book called "Women's Letters," edited by Lisa Grunwald and Stephen J.Adler. This book consisted of letters of famous women and plain folk from 1776 to 2005. These letters were filled with humor, worry, wars, gold rush days, slavery, prohibition, depression and as one famous singer Janis Toplan said, "I wish I had fans that thought I was as good as I think 1 am." We all enjoyed this expression and all the interesting letters. Our singing time was led by Jane B. Nelson and piano by Ruth Leifson. We sang "My wild Irish Rose" and "When Irish eyes are smiling" with new Thalian words. Our Thalian song ended and our meeting and our next party will be our MotherDaughter party April 12, 2008. • .
