He was born Dec. 9, 1929 to Ernest C. and Sarah.Ellen Bearnson Hanks in Salem. He lived most of his life in the same home. Ernest met his beloved wife, Elva Peterson, on a blind date. They married on March 18, 1955. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. As a member of the LDS church, he loved his home teachers. Big Em worked at Geneva Steel for more than 30 years as a crane operator, at Salem City, and for Utah County Weed Control. Ern was well-known for his loved garden. He enjoyed going camping in his trailer with his family. Ernest is survived by his wife, Elva; children, Sue (Tom) Atchison; Brenda Hanks; Colleen (Gary) King; and Roger E. Hanks; grandchildren, Amanda A. (Brian) Clark; Matt Atchison; Clay Atchison; and Craig King; and greatgrandchildren, Jason Clark and Justin Clark. He is also survived by his siblings, Carol H. (Burton, deceased) Talmage; Richard F. (Jeannie) Hanks; and Linda H. (Dale) Peery; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest C. Hanks and Sarah Ellen Bearnson Hanks. Funeral services will be held, Thursday, March 13, at 11 a.m. at the Salem Stake Center Chapel, 470 East Salem Canal Rd., Salem. Family and friends may call Wednesday evening, March 12, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. at Walker Mortuary, 187 South Main St., Spanish Fork, or at the Salem Stake Center one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Salem City Cemetery.
