Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2008 • B5 Orchestra qualifies for state Kimberly Mull ins and Natesa Stephens SFHS On Thursday, March 6, the Spanish Fork High School Chamber Orchestra traveled to American Fork High School to compete in the Strings Solo and Ensemble Region Competition. The Chamber Orchestra is an audition orchestra made up of high school students under the direction of Margaret Larsen. For the competition the orchestra performed "Frolicsome Finale." the fourth movement in "Simple Symphony" by Benjamin Britten. The group practiced long and hard to get this piece ready for competition and all of that practicing paid off. After performing the piece for one of the region judges, they were informed that they had received a superior rating and would therefore move on to the state competition in April. As well as performing with the group, several members of the orchestra had prepared solo, duet or trio pieces to perform on their own. Several of these performers from Spanish Fork High School also qualified to move on to the state competition. While at the competition the students were also able to listen to the other performing groups and enjoy the music. Jace Brown, a viola player in the Chamber Orchestra, said, "It was so much fun watching the other groups perform and being completely immersed in the world of music. It was great being there and I'm excited for state." Overall, the students all had a great experience and can't wait to take their piece on to the next level. Gotcha! at SFHS Christene Choate STAFF WRITER The game of Gotcha was started in the spring of 2006, by the senior class officers, and is still continuing today. On Wednesday, March 5, the first meeting of this year's Gotcha was held. Any student at Spanish Fork High School can join by paying a fee of five dollars. This year's game will be little different than the year's past with new rules put into play. Gotcha begins by giving each player a card with a name of person who is also playing the game. The goal is to squirt the person on that card with water, when you finally get your person out they are required to give you their card and you will go after their person. The game continues on until there is one person left standing or the person with the most Your source for Schools news: Courtesy photo PATRIOTS: Natesa Stephens with other essay finalists, Whitney Dixon and Karsional Christopherson as they display their winning essays. Patriotism expressed in essays m Josie Osborn SFHS Natesa Stephens recently participated in the American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest. The theme this year was Americanism. Natesa chose to write her essay about what America means to her in her life at the present and what America might hold for her in the future. She explained that by living in America you have the means to make impossible dreams come true. Natesa continued to write about how she might want her family life to be like in her future of living in America and also the influences that this great country has on her life. Natesa wants to be able to grow up and take part in making our country greater by leading a constructive and meaningful life as an adult. Natesa took first place in the 11-12th grade category. Other finalists included Whitney Dixon, and Karsional Christopherson. "It was a great opportunity to be able to express my love for living in America," said Natesa. "It was a great feeling to learn that I'd won the contest because it's something I never would have expected, but still I was very happy." cards at the end. A new rule this year is that starting on April 9,2008 each player is required to get one person out a week. If not you are automatically eliminated. This rule was put into place in hopes of moving the game a little faster unlike last year's game which was never officially ended. Gotcha is unlike any game. It allows spying, deceiving and a lot of planning. You are all on your own, you can only depend on yourself. "It's going to be so awesome," said senior Whitney Dixon. "I can't wait." This is a popular game at Spanish Fork High School; this year's game had a turnout of over 100 students. The winner will receive $100, and the rest of the entry fees will go to Bosnia to help the humanitarian aide. The s P anish Fork News Covering what matters most • N E W S Spanish Fork do you get it?
