Show ^chools Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2008 • B3 Fundraiser open to public Shiloh M. Nelson SFHS Spanish Fork High School is hosting a fundraiser for orphans in Romania. The orphanage has no teacher, so the children have no chance for an education or a job when they grow up. We as a student council at Spanish Fork High School would like to raise enough money to hire a teacher in Romania at about twelve dollars a day. We would like to stress that although this fundraiser is being hosted at Spanish Fork High School, this is a fund raiser for the entire city of Spanish Fork and we would like your participation. The money is being accepted through March 21, 2008 at the finance office at Spanish Fork High School. Here's why you might want to donate: The concept of a parent is really quite amazing. From the time you are born you have someone to feed you, to clothe you, and to love you when you most need love. Parents comfort you when you are hurt and protect you from the dangers of the world as you grow. Now imagine sometime soon after you were born both your parents died and abandoned you to the perils of the world. Or worse yet, if both were still living and decided they didn't love you. This is the cruel reality that greets the orphans of Romania every day. This is the harsh truth, so great that they cannot hide from it even in their dreams. Their birthdays are only celebrated once in their lives: on their eighteenth birthday. They receive only the sound of a door slamming shut behind them and the prospects of finding the best street on which to beg. If your brother or sister died leaving behind a son and two daughters, how many of you would refuse to let them live with you for a week? What if it was not your sibling that died but your cousin? What about a neighbor or a close friend, would you not feed their children? Are the lives of the children in Romania any less important only because you do not know them? Or because they Were not bom in America? How many friendly people would be hired if they had a great personality but could not count to ten or recite the alphabet? Without a teacher, many of the orphans are kicked out at eighteen not knowing how to spell their first name, destined to be reduced to thieves and beggars from the moment they become an orphan. Now is the time to stand a little taller, to reach a little deeper into our pockets and draw forth more than the petty change that plagues charities throughout time. If every penny helps, how much could you accomplish if for one day you gave the money you would have spent on lunch, or if for one day you didn't buy a soft drink and invested the money in the lives of these children. Today is the day to begin living the principle that all men are created equal. You are the final judge; you choose the final verdict; you can reach across oceans and take their hands as a savior, or you can let go of their fingers one by one and condemn them to a life of misery not fit for murderers. You are their first, last, and only hope. I urge all of you as Americans, as citizens of Spanish Fork, and as individuals with all the persuasiveness of which I am capable to give freely of your abundance and love these children as if they were your own.
